Hi All,

Does anyone know if it's okay with the search engines if you redirect a directory from one site to another domain through the .htaccess file?

It seems like it should be fine, but I just want to check with those who know more about this stuff.

Here's the scenario:

I have an old design client's site that I was hosting on a directory of my server. webwhiz.net/screens The site has been there for years and years (like from 1997 or so) and has great search engine rankings everywhere. They recently purchased a domain name, and of course would prefer to use that URL. So I am now doing the .htaccess redirect to the new domain. If anyone gets to the /screens directory on my server, it seamlessly redirects to the new domain name. I can't imagine this would be a problem. At first I simply put both sites up with the same info, but that seems like it could be called mirror pages and I didn't want rankings to drop.

Anyway, if anyone has any experience with this and knows if it's a good way (or bad way) to do it, please let me know!

my 2 cents,

I dont think it will have an effect unless the two sites have a separate IP

hmmm. I have heard some people talk about that but I am not sure about all the details and if it truly works or not.

Doug, the redirect thing works fine. I just want to be sure the engines don't mind. It seems unlikely they will care as it's a good way to do something like this without being sneaky. Would just like confirmation from someone who's used this method before. I guess I'll be my own test subject!

Oh yes, that's what I mean. I have not heard from anyone who has actually tried it and confirmed that the engines are fine with it. Test away! :)

Jill,

You might like to get in touch with Mel who is carrying out a somewhat similar exercise for me at the moment.
