Hi all,

I have read with interest the various threads about people applying to become dmoz editors and being rejected. I can certainly understand the possible reasons given such as poor grammar, spelling errors, etc. Sticking with those guidelines will help ensure better editors, and a better directory.

In my case it is not a matter of being rejected, but a matter of not getting any response at all. Roughly every 6 months for the past two years I have tried to volunteer to edit one category or another. So in perhaps 4 or 5 attempts I have never even had a response. Is that normal, or is that what people mean when they say they were rejected?

:hi: markin...welcome to the forums

When you submit an application to become an editor, you should receive a confirmation email that you must reply to in order to complete the application process. They send this to the email address that you used in the application. All you need to do is hit 'reply' and send it as is...

Have you received this email when submitting your editor applications?

Then after you confirm your email, they will review your editor applications...one way or the other you will hear whether or not you were accepted as an editor.

Are you using a valid email address?

Thanks for replying so quickly.

Yes, I do get the confirmation e-mail each time, and I do reply to it. In each case, that has been the last I have heard of the application. I have not received any further e-mails on any of the attempts.

I like to think I write pretty clearly, but if they really didn't like my spelling, grammar, or site suggestions, that would at least be something. As it is, with no feedback at all, it just leads me to think that ODP is somehow on the ropes, which would be sad. On recent attempts, I have tried the approach of going a few categories up the tree, and also going to the main feedback links to ask if this lack of response is normal, but I've had no response to those either.

Applying 4-5 times over the coarse of 2 years and not one response does seem a bit strange to me...

I don't know the average turn-around time between submitting an application and receiving an acceptance...Many members here are editors at ODP. Hopefully, they will be able to offer you more help and insight...

Welcome to the forums Markin! :hi:

The only experience I had with trying to become an editor was quite awhile ago when I was rejected. I only applied one time, and they did reply saying 'at this time I am not needed' or something to that affect. :)

Markin,

I too received a rejection e-mail from DMOZ when I applied for an editor position. I was told that there were enough editors in the category I reguested. However, 2 of my team members got approved as DMOZ editors within days.

My question is this - do you notice if the categories you are submitting to are ever updated? Either something is wrong with your submissions (technically that is) or no one is responding to the category e-mails.

Have you tried e-mail DMOZ through
http://dmoz.org/cgi-bin/feedback.cgi?

Good luck!

Ah-ha, you might just try posting these questions at the new ODP Editor Sponsored Forums for just this type of subject!

Actually I cannot take credit for this find. I will take credit though for spending hours online every day and finding stuff like this and sharing.

I remember this old commercial from back when I was in elementary school. They would ask the question...

What did you learn in school today?

The answer would be...

Sharing!

I applied to become an editor for dmoz last week. I received a response this week that the URL's that I had given were "too broad."

I wanted to be the editor for Computers: Internet: Web Design and Development: Promotion: Search Engine Submitting and Positioning: Help and Tutorials.. I submitted this FORUM as well as rankwrite.com

Oh well.

Boarhead, I suspect it was the category that was too broad; and aren't those Urls already in that category?
I think DMOZ wants us to work our way up, choose a small geographical category to start with.

Well, to put everyone's hearts and minds at ease, rest assured that I did finally get accepted. It was a small regional category, all right. A tiny remote town (where I happen to have spent a few summers) with two whole sites in it.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

Congrats markin!

Wow! Two whole sites, huh? You've got your work cut out for ya! I think my cat had slightly more than that when I started, and I've set a goal to add a new site a week, though sometimes I slack off a bit.

I DO regularly check my cat for new submissions though and am proud to say that no site that has been submitted has had to wait more than three days for inclusion.

:D

boarhead,

Yes, I suspect glengara is correct. Have you read this (http://dmoz.org/help/become.html) and any of these (http://dmoz.org/help/helpmain.html)?

Try again and choose a more regional category, drill waaaaay down to find a good one.

Also make sure the sites you suggest (and DO suggest three sites) are not already in the Directory.

If you follow the DMOZ guidelines very closely, you will get in.

Good Luck,
