View Full Version : Signatures and Avatars

Some of you may wish to view all the threads with the signatures and avatars turned off.
If so, go to your 'user cp' control panel and click on 'edit options'. Scroll down to see the section labeled 'thread view options'.
'check' the box that says 'no' for each of them or one or the other.
That is it.
You will not see either the signatures or avatars in the threads. :)
I personally like them as I think many are quite funny, but I also know some of you may not like to see them.
BTW, this was 'manwah's' idea to put up this tip so everyone will know exactly how to do this if they choose to do so. :)

Thanks for the recognition Doug! ;)
It was just a thought, as there might be a number of people who are used to the more formal style that we have come to expect from the other forums in our industry.
Personally, I enjoy the avatars and think the use of sigs is a nice touch. I also realise that it's not for everybody.
One of the good things about this forum is that there are a number of user options that you can play with to make it suit your tastes.
Hope that helps...

LOL. A good way to make the lurkers register. You can't avoid the sigs and avatars unless you register!

The way I look at it is this:
I allow signatures to help my members. No other reason.
I also do believe (crazy as it may seem) that sigs cut down on the amount of spam that takes place. Members know they can become good, helpful members and can also have a signature in every post. NO need to spam.
I also am aware of a thread started on WMW about this very subject. A good thread!
I am a firm believer in helping any way I can. If a very slick professional spammer does manage to drop a link in here without anyone noticing, oh well.
I choose to not waste my time fending them off. But we do watch for attempts to do this but also know that the same professional spammer can simply become a good member and include a signature. Same damn thing in my book.
I simply don't care if they then show a link from here in Google that may or may not help them. I have much better things to do and worry about.
I think this place so far is fairly spam free and the mods spot things kind of quickly but I also know some things may get through.
I also know that I wish the forums to be a good resource, etc, so talking about products and other resources has to be in the equation. I know when I am looking for something, I may realize that I don't go to Google to find it as I recalled a post in here from the past that included the info or product I was looking for anyway and simply do a search for it here.
I also think Brett does a very good job with his forums and the type of forums he wishes to have. We just have different philosophies about how to do it. Nothing wrong with that as members of both can cruise back and forth between us and have a variety of different kinds of members and topics to read about.
I also think my way is a lot easier for me and the mods. :)
Besides, the SEO forums out there would be pretty boring if we all ran things the same way. :)

>with the signatures and avatars turned off
I've had the sigs turned off for quite some time. I dont mind the avatars, but sigs/tags-- I can do without. My personal pref. I think that's what profiles are for.
But I do agree that this is one of the friendliest places around, and there is a very good knowledgebase too!
Doug, dont you remember? We had this conversation quite some time ago. It seemed like you didnt think they turned off all the sigs for me, and I didnt bring it up again, for fear you'd disable that feature!;) LOL

LOL
The great thing about it is that you have to be a member in order to view in here with that option! All 'guests' who lurk and don't become a member have no choice.

Hey there, I'm a brand new, registered user and I can't figure out how to get my own avatar into my profile.
This may seem like a silly question, seeing as how we're all super-savvy computer users (;) )... but seriously- how do I get one of my own in here???
Any help on this would be appreciated greatly.

:hi: GirlOnTop, welcome to IHY!
Not a stupid question actually. You get to have your own avatar once you have made 50 posts.

Well, I guess I'll just have to find something to talk about. Either that- or get used to the whole "Torroid Affair"ish Avatar I've got now.
Thanks a bunch for the info!

Arnabme - you've opened a 2004 thread to welcome someone who joined before you did. In 2004 in fact.
Please do not do that.
Thanks!

The King Saud University is organizing a free weekly contest, with the purpose to spread the knowledge world-wide – anyone can participate in it!
This week question is:
Ofakker (Think) in Arabic, a word embody the first Arabic letters of the words (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics), it's part of the logo of one of the knowledge centers in King Saud University … what is the name of that Center?
I found the answer by searching the King Saud University website, which is: The Excellence Center of Science and Mathematics Education
And the link for that answer is: [url removed by moderator]
