Press conference on MSNBC now about the virus. Saying tomorrow the net could be brought to it's knees.

Windows NT and Windows 2000 users are the ones that are at risk tomorrow nite at 8:30pm.

The rest of us will experience the net at a crawl at this time. Maybe even shut down completely.

Code Red is ``enough to cause the meltdown of the Internet,'' Cooper told Reuters.

Hmmm. Call me Mr. Complacent but I can't remember the last time any such dramatic media hype ever turned out to be the case.

What we need is a "code spam". An internet worm that will wipe out all the spammers!!!

Personal computers are exempt from the Code Red virus, as it is only designed to exploit a security flaw on only Windows NT and Windows 2000 servers. The virus exploits a buffer over-run error which results with granting the user Local System privileges.

Only servers with IIS installed and enabled are vulnerable. At issue is a DLL installed by default, but only utilized whenever Index Server 2.0 is installed. See the Microsoft Security Bulletin (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS01-033.asp) for more information and/or to download the patch for either WinNT or Windows 2000.

No. No. I have faith in modern day journalism. I feel sure they wouldn't write "meltdown of the Internet" for the sake of needlessly expatiating sensationalism.

No, all we need to do is give it a few more hours and I feel confident that their horrific prediction will come true.

On the other hand, we could just sit back and say "bloody journalists with their over-active power-phrasing again" and get on with things.

Yup, I think I'll go with the latter again and just wait for the next one.

"Machines that were infected by CodeRed stopped propagating this worm as of July 28, 2001 due to its logic to go into infinite sleep mode. Although there was much speculation on whether or not this worm would wake up again on Aug 1, 2001, Symantec AntiVirus Research Center's analysis of the CodeRed
worm indicates a reinfection will not re-awaken machines that were already infected. If the worm is once again injected into the Internet, the worm can only affect machines that have not been previously infected and still have the vulnerability on the Web server."

"Speculation"? Oh, I seem to remember it being a little more than that. I distinctly remember the phrase "internet meltdown" being mentioned.

I guess the above didn't really fit into the whole theme of sensational journalism for the sake of it. Oh - the disdain I feel towards the "Virus Alert" journalists. I am sure that one day they will find their vocation in life!

....I think more people I know were hit by that W32.whatever virus than this 'Code Red Worm'. Why does the goverment and MS get top billing in these reports and not the commoners with other viruses/worms? A plot developing....

More importantly, how many extra panic sales do McAfee and Norton get everytime they confirm the next "big killer, internet busting, ground-breaking, earth-shattering and now Internet melting" virus
