Now that I have chosen this as the title of my homepage.

Everything USB - drivers, adapter, card, cable, hub, port, modem, NT, USB 2.0

I use this as my description
"At Everything USB, you will find the latest in USB 2.0 as well as reviews of usb hubs, usb adapters, usb modems, usb port cards and NT support."

What are needed to make my description and the new title a good couple?

With your chosen title, the description is fine. However, I have always been a firm believer in your most important keyword phrase towards the start of the title and the start of the description.

So, if it was me helping you, all would be changed after lots of research.

The biggest problem I can see about your title is that you have the word "Everything" right at the start. This will do you no good at all.

Here's the new title tag. I put "Everything USB" at the very last of the title.

"USB 2.0, adapter, card, cable, usb drivers, hub, port, modem, NT - Everything USB"

BTW, is it a problem to have three USBs in a title?

See usbnuts, you need to know that your tags just are not that very important anymore. Everything needs to be looked at and researched first before you worry about the tags.

I think your title is too long. It is better now, but too long. I also would not use "usb" more than two times in the title.

I also wouldn't use 'usb' more than 2-3 times in the description...i think you had it in there 5 or 6 times. Just my .02 cents

Does anyone know if you get penalized for this? Is this seen as spamming?

ihelpyou

Yes, I believe the engines might see the use of 5 times as too many times. Could be on the verge so I probably would not risk it.

I would take out the "Everything USB" from the TITLE. That will give you only two instances of USB in the title. No one is searching for "everything usb" anyway, right?

And I agree, don't put USB so many times in the description. Two times is probably your max to be safe.

I would consider more then three repetitions risky. Two at best, but if you like living on the edge, three may work.

(Personally I prefer two, being somewhat conservative.)

Shouldn't we have a Title Tag forum here? It would be nice to have a place that didn't lump it in with the meta tags like every other place. Title tags still don't get the respect that deserve. Pretty amazing considering how important they are.

But then couldn't one also say shouldn't we also have a Link Popularity forum, a Keyword Density forum and so forth?

I think that given that most people appreciate that it is a meta tag then the meta tag forum would be a logical place to look.

Just my often confused thoughts on the matter.

ihelpyou
31-07-2001, 12:26/12:26PM
True. The front page of the forum keeps getting slower with load time now. More forums would add to this. We just have to spell out in the title of the thread what the thread is about.

I don't get how link popularity and/or keyword density would fit in with Meta tags? Am I missing something?

Understand if you feel there's too many forums already, however. And the above things certainly fit into a miscellaneous category. Although the density thing probably fits okay into the content forum. Link Pop. is definitely it's own issue though, in my book. Can't think of where else it would fit.

No, my poor writing. I actually drifted from the meta tags issue a little and questioned whether it would or could be equally viable for someone to come along and say "link popularity is quite important, should that not have its own forum", etc. Independant of meta tags. Sorry for the confusion.

I guess that's my problem, I don't feel that the Title tag is a Meta tag. And it's hard to spread the word when it's always lumped in as such! Wonder what the definition of a meta tag is?

And I do think there wouldn't be anything inherently wrong with having forums that dig deeper on certain subjects. Especially things as important as Link Popularity and Title tags. But that's something that would be up to Doug, given the limitations on the server and system, etc.

Actually, I also think that link pop is content. It is any link leading away from your site and links leading to your site, so a link on your site is content.

It is fine in the content forum. I am not going to be too picky about which forum posts are made in. We can just use our best judgement.

Actually, there is a way where we could go into detail with MANY forums.

It would involve LOTS of work rearranging everything in here.

Let me think about things a little. I also would have to find time to do this.

Now, the front page includes the category name and then the forums under each category.

I could just put the categories on the front page... more of them. Then on the next page, put all the forums for that particular category you clicked on. There would be more forums for each category and there would be more pages of the different forums for each category on the front page.

Of course, this would be an extra click for everyone as you would have to click the category, then click the forum, then click the thread.

Just would need some time to do it....

Wonder what the definition of a meta tag is?

The following is according to the HTML 4.01 Document Type Definition (DTD), as published by the World Wide Web Consortium (http://www.w3.org) in December, 1999.

Every HTML document has three major components: the HTML declaration, the head, and the body. The document structure tags are those that define each component.

The <META> tag is a document structure tag. Along with the <META> tag are also included <HTML>, <HEAD>, <BASE>, <ISINDEX>, <LINK>, <SCRIPT<, <STYLE>, <TITLE>, <BDO>, and <BODY>.

The <META> tag is standalone, meaning it requires no companion tag defining "end of tag".

The <META> tags function is as follows:

Defines document meta-information, such as keywords, expiration date, author, page generation software used, and many other document-specific items. It also supports the notion of client pull ~ a dynamic document technique in which the browser loads a new document after a specified delay.

~~~
In short, the <META> tag is information about a document rather than document content.
Which means (if I'm understanding you correctly) that the Title tag is NOT a Meta tag. Kinda what I thought. Meta tags, say "meta" in them. Title doesn't! :eek:
I just did a quick search search term (http://www.google.com/search?q=title+meta+tag) and many of the top ten entries seem to agree with you.
Not that I would be overly comfortable calling many of them a definitive source for all things meta tag (or not meta tag) related I think the general evidence seems to suggest that you are indeed correct.
:D What can I say? I'm an avid reader of Steven Fry and Oscar Wilde. That mixed with a surreal wit sends my brain into some very bizarre corners at times!
As for the avatars - why? Simply because I can I think. Nothing more philosophical than that I'm afraid. I think it is maybe a mood thing. Never stopped to really analyse it.
Maybe our resident programmer analog can look into that? I like the "view new post" link as well.
The extra click comes into play mostly for the visitors to the forum. They would have to click one extra time.
I usually come here because someone replied to something in one of the forums where I posted and I got an email. So I hardly go to the home page. But while I'm here, it would be nice to give a quick click on "what's new"!
Hello Jill, (and others)
Here's a way to install the View New Posts onto your browser so it's available to you even if you aren't on the Forum's Web Site.
If you're an IE user (NS works this way too, I think) all you need to do is just click down (and hold) on the View New Posts (http://www.ihelpyouservices.com/forums/search.php?s=&action=getnew) from the Home Page (<--- or on this one right here) and DRAG it next to your LINKS Bar at the top of your browser and DROP it.
It will then read ... View New Posts ... and if that is too wide, you can easily Rename with your right mouse button.
If you're LINKS Bar is not currently visible on your browser then just click View then Toolbars then Links and it will come into view.
wow. Is that a great one! I absolutely did not know that.
Simply smashing... :scattered
Also, you can put the link anywhere on that bar. I stuck it beside the "best of the web" link. :D
BTW, we have over 200 links on that bar and you can move them around once they don't all fit on the "face" of the bar anymore.
We need a forum for browsers tips. Just Kidding ... that's the only tip we know, lol
Okay, I lied, <wink> we do know another browser tip or two.
May we suggest that once you have the View New Posts window open, that you press down (and hold) the Shift button as you click on a link. This will open a new browser window for you, then just click on the F11 key which gives you a Full Screen view.
When you're done reading simply close the window (just click the X in the upper right corner) and you will be back at the View New Posts window, and ready to repeat these steps until all new posts have been viewed.
We always attempt to eliminate using the Back button every chance we get.
(Been on the Back button wagon for some time now and want to continue the streak. LOL)
You can actually drag the links bar (or any of the other bars) by click-holding on it's "|" (the little vertical bar to the very left of each bar). So if you don't like it in it's deafult position next to the "Go" button, you can move it up to one of the other toolbars. As well, you can resize these bars if you have more than one "|'s".
For instance, if your bars are setup like mine ~ (file, view, edit...bar on top) ~ (back, stop, refresh...bar in the middle) ~ (address/links bar on bottom) you have alot of space on the top bar. So why not move one of the other bars to the top-right position ~ leaving only two bars?
