I would very much appreciate feedback from some of the experts here as to the usefulness - or otherwise - of submitting to more than the top 10 or 12 SEs.

I have always discarded those emails which tell me I can submit to 50,000 SEs for just $10 etc. and regarded them as a con.

With the exception of specialised SEs dealing in my particular niche I could not see any advantage. Have I been too close-minded. Or is that closed- minded?

Paying for what you describe is a waste of time and money, not to mention all the eMail you will receive from various "so-called" search engines that are nothing more than FFA (Free For All) Pages that simply exist to send you their eMail offers for products and services.

On the other hand it is EXTREMELY worthwhile to do MANUAL submissions to the niche directories, portals, vortals and hubs that are frequented by YOUR target market.

Once your listings appear, simply link to them all from your site. This will allow the various spiders to index them and thereby giving your page(s) an increase in PageRank for Google and more link popularity for the other search engines who use this type of ranking consideration, which all the major players do.

For an added boost in ranking consideration, just make sure to use YOUR keyword phrase in the Anchor Tag Text when listing your page(s) on these sites.

TIP: To easily locate these types of sites, go to Google (and others) and type in ...

"add URL" (your industry)

"add your URL" (your industry)

"add site" (your industry)

"add your site" (your industry)

"submit your URL" (your industry)

etc., etc., etc., ... well, you get the idea. This will bring up sites that WILL be of value to YOU. Using those "kinds of services" you described will NEVER bring you so much as a fraction of the ROI that manual submission to these other types of sites can provide you.

With much success,

Your friends,

Sharon & Roy

Thanks Sharon & Roy. You have convinced me on the value of one approach and the uselessness of the other.

One thing I have noticed over the years is that those portal sites which have a good name in their respective fields are often run by or associated with a university or college. Been getting some good links from a few of these - without even asking. One in particular gave me quite a thrill when my site was used as part of a study course by a major University college here. :)
