Hey Everyone,
Happy New Year!!! I was hoping to get some opinions from various programming experts. I have a project I want to accomplish this year, and it's going to require programming skills. I need my database project to be very very search engine friendly. At the same time, I am going to begin learning this language myself, even though I might hire out for the project, but I want to be able to do maintenance and changes myself. Which language do you think would be the best for me to pursue this project? Do any of the programming languages have limitations that could limit my portal project and ability for user generated content? I have played around a little with PHP and a little with Coldfusion. I think Coldfusion seemed fun to me, not sure why. But I want whatever will work best for me!
Looking forward to some replies! Have a great day!

As far as I know SEs do not read or care about programming languages. In the end good old html is what is displayed on the page.
So it is up to the knowledge of the programmer, rather than the language that will depend on the SE friendliness of a site.

I`ve worked with ASP, PHP, ColdFusion (BLECH!!!!!!!!), SHTML and HTML pages. It doesn`t make a lick of difference to SEs (nor should it...they`re just server-side programming languages, with the exception of HTML). It`s about the output at the end.

Ok, I was pretty sure the SE's wouldn't be too much of a concern. Since you have so much programming experience, I can tell you aren't a big fan of Coldfusion. Which language would be easier, more versatile, and better for me to pursue then? ASP? or PHP?

I would go with PHP. There are a lot of tutorials and forums that can help you along the way.

Thank you, I just wanted to know which one would be best to pursue.

You have to taken into account that any upgrades to ColdFusion are chargeable and, given the direction Adobe are taking in terms of product development there's no guarantee that Adobe will continue to develop or support it in the future.
Adobe do have a history of discontinuing products that aren't cash cows anymore ( i.e Pagemaker, Pagemill, etc. ).

ColdFusion also used to be a Macromedia product. That increases the suckage factor by at least 50%.
As far as which language is best, the question is: what do you want to do with it? It really depends.

I saw you had a rash of bumps today.
Consider seeing a dermatologist if this problem continues.

As a professional programmer, I'd recommend PHP for Linux or using ASP on a Windows servers. You can run ASP on Linux or PHP on Windows, but you could also slam your foot in a car door but why would you want to?
If you hire someone to write your code, make sure they know how to protect your pages against SQL injection attacks and similar security threats.
Unless you're doing something VERY simple to your site, consider letting the person you hire continue working on it unless you want to open your site up to vulnerabilities and exploits since you're a novice.
If you insist on DIY, try taking a class in PHP or ASP before diving into this as they aren't trivial and look at all the open source you can find online to see how other programmers do it before making a mess out of your site.

I was just getting the spammer person's post to go away is all. :) I accidentally deleted his username and all his posts, but his post still showed up in front unless a post was made after his. Do you see? Probably not. :) The only way to get rid of all his 12 new threads was to BUMB them all.

Doug, there's an easier way to do that in vBulletin.
Ban the spammer first through admincp, then jump back to the forum and choose to view all posts by the banned spammer. Once you're on the search result screen viewing all posts there's a check box that allows you to select all posts on screen, enable that then go to the bottom of the screen down to the 'Moderation' drop down menu. From there choose either 'Delete Posts' or 'Move Posts' if you want to move them to a quarantine area.

Oh yeah, I know that. I just clicked the "remove" member first so after that was totally screwed up. LOL We normally will not remove all posts though, so I just kind of lost it for a moment as the spammer made 13 quick posts in about 6 minutes in here... all in different threads.

You can choose java and SQL. Because, Java is used for front end and SQL is used for back end. I think, it will be used for your project.
