Hi

I'm new to the optimization world.

Do the search engines like people optimizing? Isn't optimizing just spamming the search engines, or using search engines in a way that they (the SEs) don't like?

I don't want to do anything to annoy the search engines.

Any help appreciated. Thankyou.

It depends on what you mean by "optimization." Yeah, the search engines don't like people trying to trick them or subvert their listings, that's a given.

However, the search engines have no problem with people making their sites the best they can be, which to me is the ultimate definition of search engine optimization.

Welcome to the forums newkid! :hi:

Yep. Anything you do that makes your site better to your visitors and also better to the SE's that does Not 'trick' them in anyway is 'optimization'.

In other words, what Jill said. :)

Cool :)

>>"better to the SE's....visitors"

Better in what way?

I guess optimization is constructing your site in such a way as to get high rankings in search engine results for the purpose of driving traffic. A form of marketing.

What does it mean to "subvert their listings"?

I would say that subvert their listings means something like taking a site that shouldn't really be top 10 for a particular phrase, and making it get a top 10 ranking by taking advantage of weaknesses in the SE's algorithm.

For example, taking a so-so site, and getting a whole bunch of links to it just because they are sites that you own yourself.

A search engine might consider that subverting their lisings.

One can allways make their site search engine friendly.
Removing a frame or adding some popular keywords to ur meta tags is not a "trick" or "spamming".
