View Full Version : Yahoo doesn't like my site

I have a puzzling question about Yahoo! directory searching that I someone could answer.

Originally, I thought that Yahoo! only used the information you supplied to them and a small consideration of the popularity of your site for searching. I had changed my business name, hoping to receive better listings on the
Yahoo! directory. However, when searching for my business name (which is a popular keyword - 'Domain Hosting'), it shows up around 900/920 sites. However, on Yahoo Australia's page, it shows up 3/2144 and on Yahoo Canada, it shows up 59/1051. This, to me, makes no sense what so ever.

Would the fact that no sites link to my new site - as I had just changed names - have anything to do with this? I wouldn't think that it would make that much of a difference. Also, there are only 4 other sites that contain the keyword 'Domain Hosting' in their name - and they all show up in the top 10 sites for 'Domain Hosting' on yahoo.com Direcroty searching.

Below is my site category, name, description, and internet address. The keyword is 'domain hosting', yet my site appears almost last for this keyword.

Canada > Ontario > Bruce > Tara > Business and Shopping > Business to Business > Communications and Networking > Internet and World Wide Web > Network Service Providers > Web Site Hosting

Domain Hosting, Inc. - Unix/Windows web hosting services featuring FrontPage 2000 extensions, Coldfusion support, control panels, web design, and more.

Internet address - www.domainhostinginc.com

Is this site being listed so low for a reason? Also, when searching for other keywords such as 'Coldfusion Hosting', my site appears last (7/7 sites).

Any input into what I should do or why this would be happening would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forums The Wiz! :hi:

The mysteries of Yahoo are vast. There are many theories on why or how Yahoo ranks sites but never any clear-cut reasons.

I do know that your title is only part of the puzzle. Many things come into play including the number of times your listing is clicked on.

There is really not much you can do to improve any listing. My main site is in the same boat as you with few hits from the Yahoo directory. I just do not worry about it and concentrate lots on Google so as to get hits from Yahoo/Google results.

Great looking site!

Others here might be able to give their theories...

Hope you enjoy it here!

Welcome to the forum! :hi:

I'm afraid that Yahoo is not my area of expertise at all. In fact, I hate Yahoo with a passion. I am pretty much the same as Doug. I go for Google and rely on the Yahoo/Google combi. Seems to work well. I also agree with him that it is a very nice and clean site.

Your site - just thought you may like to know - you have one or two typos on there.

"include creating e-mail, bulliten boards" = Should be bulletin boards

"Domain Hosting offers 3 guarantee's to it's customers" = Should be guarantees and it's should be its.

"for 30 days and if you're not satisfied our hosting" = Should there be a 'with' in there?

Please don't take it personally - I just spot these things quicker than I spot anything else and thought you may like to look at them.

Thanks for pointing out the typos. I'll be sure to make the changes shortly.

I guess you're right. I should concentrate on Google. However, I shouldn't complain about yahoo. The few people they send to my site usually sign up and have made my company far more than the $200 to get listed.

And that is the bottom line. Finding what works for you and utilising it to the fullest. I am in the bizarre position of just shifting sites from a previous one and so I haven't got around to paying anyone a penny yet. The very notion of paying to be listed really goes against my entire grain but I will do it anyway just to maximise the chances.

Good point The Wiz... Getting a few hits from them is better than none at all. I also get very little but the money was minimal compared to the benefits.

I like Yahoo for certain sites. When you get a good listing, it can be ****. But if you don't, nothing you can do about it, so no sense worrying! (This of course is after all appeals are exhausted, etc.) Some sites are gonna get tons of traffic from Yahoo...other's aren't. Those in the Internet Biz are not gonna get lots of hits from Yahoo. Other, more specialty kinda sites, can do extremely well. I have some sites that get 3 or 4 hundred visitors a day from Yahoo. My own site gets just a couple! No biggie. Google rocks!
