Some sound advice in this article that I just came across:

Did you guys know that the "Page" in PageRank actually stands for Google Co-Founder, Larry Page?

The Google guy at the last conference (or actually it was the Dallas one) said that it was named after Larry Page. Of course, they could have done this on purpose since the page fit...

I seem to remember reading that a couple of weeks ago.

Yes, but it had to rhyme. Kind of reminds me of the saying in that famous trial a few years back.

Glove don't fit, ya must aquit...

It's a great looking fast loading page, and I liked the graphics too!~

But you know there is one thing I noticed is missing both from the content as well as the HTML itself. And this is the mention/use of the ALT tags for images. As a courtesy the ALT text will be displayed if the image is not loaded and on MouseOver() event, so it can provide additional details <with tactful use of keywords> for users as well as search engines <such as google> which do such an excellent job performing a full page index.

By the way Google is hiring (http://www.google.com/jobs/index.html).

Welcome Chris!~ :hi:

<lol> Great introduction!~ That's a really great looking and fast loading page, plus the content is very good as well. Reads as if you've done the homework on Google. So what are your thoughts concerning the use of ALT text for images? <please don't construe my comments as negative..as you cover many great aspects already>

<grins> Thanks for the compliments but i can't take credit for the page i'm afraid! The content's mine (the article)..but the page is not. The article was released months ago and is free for people to use on their sites or in ezines etc provided the hyperlinks stay intact. 'Tis just another person helping create links to my site :-) At least i practice what i preach...PageRank!! Judging by my log files there are quite a few alternate versions out there somewhere.

As for alt tags. That's what i was looking for information in forums for!! I left them out of the article because I'm not completely sure what the status is with them and i needed to keep the word count down (so people would publish it). It used to be that google saw all alt text as just more text, now it would appear (read semi-guess) that it's treated less favourably. However, you'd be 100% right to say _always_ use alt tags with google because....

Google's beta image index (search) shows the original page that the image was on. It won't be a lot right now but you're obviously going to get a few more hits by using it. i.e. google's image search appears to be ranked on:

source page filename, image filename, alt tag text

So feel free to change all your image file names to _appropriate_ key words and add the alt text. I'd stress again that it won't create a lot of hits from either regular google search or the image search but as its such a simple thing to do obviously its worth putting them in.

Oops...bit long..Sorry..that's almost another article :-)

hey Chris, no post is too long in here.

Good points! We do know the alt tags are given much less weight these days, but how much less is up in the air. Never hurts to include them for the obvious reasons.

<lol> <again>

Great article Chris!~ And very valid points about article lengths, as any topic covering Google could very well go on for pages. The reminder of the Google [beta] image index is also worth noting. In addition, it is important to recognize that the alt tags are displayed in any browser with graphics disabled, as well as helping to adhere to [508 (http://www.section508.gov/About508.htm)] accessibility compliancy for those with computing disabilities.

Hello Chris,

Welcome to the Forums! :hi:

Below is what Craig Silverstein, of Google says about ALT tags.

---

Excerpt From: Google Interview by Fredrick Marckini with Craig Silverstein, Chief Technology Officer of Google - June 2001

ALT tags

For companies who have built Web Sites without much text where the copy is represented in the graphics Craig suggests that they employ the ALT tags and either re-create the body copy contained in the graphics in the ALT tags and attempt to describe the "concepts" depicted in the graphics.
