View Full Version : Am I penalised in Ink?

I am working for a client. The usual demand: do whatever you want to get me ranked high, only don't touch my site!

I am used to making information pages in such cases - worked pretty well at Inktomi so far, using pretty much the techniques PageOneResults describes in this forum.

This time it just didn't work, and I can't figure out why.

Inktomi indexed the page, but no rankings at all. When I type the name of the company + what they do, I get 2 results, 1 of them is my page. For all other keyphrases, no matter how specific they are, the page appears near the middle or end of the results. For example, if the results are in total 65 (for a 5-word keyphrase!), I will be somewhere around nr.30... I just can't get it!

The sites ranking above me are not optimised better than myself. I did some tweaking once, filling the page with even more keyphrases... But now I feel I am close to the line of spam, or maybe even crossing it, so I don't want to do it again... And obviously bad optimisation is not the reason for these low rankings...

So is this how Inktomi probably penalise? Not remove you from the index, but keep you down as if you don't exist and show you only when you are the only match?

I don't know what to explain to my client...

Please help. The URL is in my profile.

Looks very spammy to me, I'm afraid so that's probably what the problem is. Also there are no links into this page as far as I can see.

All those comment tags too are nothing more than spam. I have always been under the impression that what works best in Ink is a low-ish keyword density and not too much text on a page. Why not remove the word yoga from every one of those links into the main site, get rid of all the comment tags and see what happens.

It will still be a doorway page though and Ink is cracking down on these.

This page is an easily identified doorway which Inktomi will penalize. Two checks can be made by Ink's spiders immediately - see if there is an incoming link from the site home page (or directory index page) and if there is a link pack to the home page (or directory index page).

If this check fails you will probably be flagged for a check. In the past, it didn't matter too much. Since Ink tightened their rules, it matters a lot!

Couple the above with the other triggers such as duplicate description tags, stuffed keyword tag and stuffed comment tags - you are out for the count I'm afraid.

Curing the problem means going back to the drawing board. No matter what you do to clean up the page, it will attract a penalty unless you contact Inktomi directly to re-look at it. The domain may also now be tainted for new page submissions. I've learnt this from my own experience :(

Best bet? Put a new page on a new domain - or even better get an informational domain which can stand in its' own right. Swap the URLs in Ink (if you can) and you may get back on track.

Yes.

Welcome to the forums gorichka! :hi:

I cannot agree more with the above two posts. What is wrong with simply opimizing the client's site? If the client refuses, DUMP em. They ain't worth the headaches.

Thank you all for replies & good advice!

Lesson learned. I will correct the page ASAP and do my best not to spam Ink again. Fortunately the other pages on the same domain are not affected by the penalty, so I have the chance to correct them too.

I want also to apologise for this to all of you members of this forum and of the SEO community. I am ashamed I went so far :(
I believe there should be ethincs in this work and moral borders that should not be crossed.

At least now I know where they are...

MMT, how does one contact Inktomi to ask them to review the page/site again? I am a pos tech customer but they won't do it for me...

After a certian period of time will the re-evaluate the page?

Thanks,

 Shameless bump

Does anyone have info on how to contact Ink and ask them to review a penalty? I have searched the Ink site and even contact some Ink partners with no results.

Thanks,

I did not know you could do that. I assume you simply clean up the page and then be patient. I don't know.
