View Full Version : Yahoo UK -- How results are displayed

I was wondering what position I might expect for the key term "mobile phones" in the Yahoo UK directory if for example the name of my company and web site is:
XYZ Mobile Phones
And I submit my site under this category:
Entertainment > Consumer Electronics > Communications and Information Management > Telephones > Cellular
The current listings on the first page for the key term "mobile phones" do NOT include this specific category -- although it does display as one of the categories at the top of the results page.
Also within this particular category -- there are no other site names that include both of these key terms (mobile phones) in their title.
Since this Cellular category would alphabetically display before the Directories category (which is the first directory to display results on the Yahoo UK first page) -- I was just wondering if my site would end up on the first page -- or if it would be shuffled to some other page.
I am trying to make sense as to how Yahoo UK displays their listings -- which certainly is a lot different than US results!!

Yahoo UK is tough!
I normally put a site into the first category which displays results if I can - or the first one which displays results where my product or service fits. That usually works - especially if you have your primary phrase in the title and URL. However, results change on a monthly basis - so there is no really reliable way.
Click-through plays a bigger part here than in Yahoo US. Mobile phones is a pretty hard one though.
Good luck :)

Barry
Normally when you submit a client's UK site do you submit to the Yahoo-UK or the Yahoo-US version? I just read that most UK searchers use the US version of Yahoo -- and that it is important to add UK in the title since this is how UK users search on Yahoo.
Would I be allowed to submit to both the UK and US versions of Yahoo?? Does submitting to one directory (UK) also get the site into the other (US)?
Thanks

Submitting to UK puts you in US also.
If you have a .co.uk domain - there is no need to put a 'UK' in title - it will pick it out of the URL.
People searching .com outnumber .co.uk about 2/1 - up from 4/1 a year ago. So more people are now switching to the UK version.
The good news about submitting via UK for a UK site is that it is currently a one-off fee - not annual like Yahoo US :)

It was probably missed because of the day it was posted (April 15) Tax day!
Barry, if you submit to Yahoo UK will Yahoo US pick up the site too, or no? I mean, if it's just a .com and not a .co.uk ???

Yes - you get into .com. I routinely get sites in and showing on .com within 48 hours of submission to .co.uk.
It will work with a .com site ONLY if the site is clearly related/relevant to the UK. If it is not you may be rejected.

Not paying them perhaps? Getting out the credit card works for me every time :)

Barry
Are you saying you pay for inclusion into Yahoo UK -- and then also pay for inclusion into Yahoo US??

No - just UK.

Well I just got an email from Yahoo UK, saying that the site I run for my parent's holiday cottage has been submitted to UK & Ire, and subsequently .com. It was a free submission and I only submitted it last week!! :thebomb:
On the other hand, I can't get my work's websites (far more professional and impressive in every way, probably because I don't design them :p ) submitted for love nor money to Yahoo.
Guess it's time to follow your advice Barry and ask for the company credit card.

As long as you follow the guidelines the editors at Yahoo (and BT Looksmart for that matter) are blisteringly quick at getting you into the directory and then delivering traffic.
Because the sites have a little "new" icon attached to them they tend to get spiked visits in the first week or so, then it settles down before the consistent traffic comes through.
You will find that the less competitive the category the more likely it is that you may get a listing for free, but it does take a long time and there are no guarantees.
Most companies that we have submitted to Yahoo have recouped the cost of the entry inside a couple of months, and as Barry said, for now at least, in the UK (provided it's obvious there is a UK connection, normally via a contact page with a real address on it ), the submission is a one off.
The other nice thing is that the fee of £199 includes VAT if applicable, so for a VAT registered company (like us) we can claim back the VAT, making it even better value for money, expert advice on a category and still less money than DIY.
