This looks like it explains it:

http://www.blogger.com/about.pyra

Basically, it gives the webmaster the ability to post anything on his/her own web site instantly. Sorta like how a forum post works, only that the webmaster can do it. I think anyway.

....what I've heard about it, but there is something about, I think, a webring which helps get you good ratings with SE's; I think 'The Screensavers' was talking about a couple of weeks ago. I'll read the article tomorrow and 'try to remember....the kind of September'.... ugg.

Thanks

Please stay away from all webrings if you wish to do well with the engines. They view all of them as nothing more than link farms designed to inflate link popularity.

Google in particular is watching for them and penalizes big time if you are in them.

....I have always ventured from webrings and in the back of my head I was thinking that 'it will eventually catch up to them (webrings) at SE's'. A friend tried to get me involved in them a couple of years ago and I said na-a-a-a-a-a-a.:nerd:

Very good choice. A year ago they may have been okay, but now, a big no-no.

Dear I Help You.
I belong to several Yahoo women's groups where I have to belong to their webring.
These groups are social, supportive.
Yes I really am friends with offline friends but there's also online ones too.
These webrings are listed on a page on my site. Are you saying Google is penalising me because there's webrings on my site?
I don't want to quit these groups because they fill in an emotional, social need.

No I don't think you are going to be penalized because of a webring. Most of them use javascript which right now is ignored by the SEs.

They are not as affective as they used to be for getting traffic.

They make a site look unprofessional IMO, but to use them is up to the site owner.

Q has an article about them in the writers forum.

Yes. The webring itself is okay, but it's the perception of your visitors that is the question. If you "sell" something on your site webrings just don't look professional anymore.
