Seems to be a new development on MSN...
Learning more as I compare...
My theory so far...
--Overture listings appear under "featured listings" if the are at least $0.15
examples: robinhood, happy days, horse bridal
--Unless they are very popular keywords
examples: desinys child, music videos
Looking for feedback. Anybody awake tonight?

I suspected L$ had something more up their sleeves. You appear to be correct.
Pretty dire. Brought to you by Microshaft

Well, I fail to see how this changes anything? Featured listings can only show a couple of sites.
MSN and LS will go down the tubes together.

There will be no LookSmart and no Overture
So for 3 days out of each month MSN will be a great search engine. Now that's what I call 'Trustworthy Computing' Bill.
If only they could change the heading to:
"Your search yielded the following advertisements. To see actual results, please hit the next button 7 times, except at the end of the month you may only need to hit 'next' 3 times."

Ackk! And look at the big SUBMIT YOUR SITE TO MSN Box at the top of results. (At least for "search engine optimization it was there.) Goes to LookSmart. :(

Why don't they just say this: Your search yielded the following advertisements. To see actual results, please go to Google!
It's really not surprising as the typical MSN user has no clue and won't care.

Am I right in saying that MSN search function falls quite short in comparison to Google, Yahoo, and AOL? I'm referring to number of people using it.

Looks like this...

I just read an article this morning (or I guess yesterday morning by now!) that said something like 46% of the global market used Google, as compared to 20-something percent for MSN, YAHOO, and AOL. I don't remember where the article was or what the actual numbers were, but it was something like that. I was kind of surprised by it.

Not sure Jill - but the Netratings stuff (which is portal traffic - not pure search - except obviously for google) is here for last week:

O.K.,
To save you clicking on
the figures as quoted were
Google 46%
Yahoo 20%
M$N 7.8%
AOL in 7th place at 1.8%
BTW that Dutch companywho supplied the figures has been going for quite some time I believe and have a pretty good reputation.

Isn't what MSN is displaying very blatant false advertising?
MSN Web Site Submission
Submit your web site to MSN and other major search engines.
How the heck can they get away with that, and should they get away with it?
That is VERY misleading and a VERY wrong statement. It is completely bogus and VERY immoral and UNethical.

Doug,
This is all part of Mocrosoft's new 'Trustworthy Computing' strategy. Microsoft is turning over a new leaf, and there is no better company than LookSmart to help them do it.

Yep, that was the article!
Doug, why is MSN unethical in saying that people can submit to MSN through LS? That's true enough, isn't it?

I think it's just the use of the phrase "search engine" that Doug has a problem with, as opposed to, say, "advertising engine".
Unfortunately, Doug, a search engine is just a piece of software that searches a database and outputs the results. The problem is not one of definition, but one of inferred meaning by the majority of users.
I do find myself reading the CommercialAlert FTC Filing (http://www.commercialalert.org/searchengines/searchengines.html) quite a lot lately. Wonder how it's getting on...

Hey Enzed - you owe me an email??
Sorry Chris - I 'll be back to you next week. I've got to run it past the other shareholders before I start talking as the discussion may be business sensitive. Hope you understand.
I'll be back to you Tuesday at the lastest.
