Welcome Big Guerrilla and Congratulations!
It is GREAT for Link Popularity to have it's own Forum since this is one of the most confusing and misunderstood aspects of all the SEO techniques for folks to get a good handle on.
We are confident that you'll be a wonderful teacher and guide as we all pick your brain and walk away with some of (if not all of) your insightful wisdom. We encourage you and we hope you have a lot of fun as our Forum's newest moderator.
Again Welcome, Big Guerrilla.
Your Friends,
Sharon & Roy

I have been asked to list a particular clients site in as many general directories and niche/topical directories as I can. Having done this to the best of my limited ability, how can I now get the SE's to pick up these listing and start showing a bit of growth in the link popularity of the site. I often wonder if I'm going the right way about things, the client's site has been submitted to the leading SE's and some of the more popular, but lesser ones. How do I ensure the directory listings and links to other sites are picked up. I have to produce a search engine report next month and would like to show a growth in the number of links to my client's site. I know there is a number of different questions here but they are all in the same theme.

Hi Vince,
That's a good question. As far as I know, there's not a lot you can to do to make sure the other sites are picked up. If they are quality directories, hubs, etc. and not link farms, the SE's will pick them up on their own. In fact, since these sites are hopefully considered "authority" sites, they should be spidered fairly frequently by SE's like Google, etc.
In the meantime, there is a cool service found at http://www.marketleap.com/publinkpop/default.htm which can help you check your clients' various links.

Thanks a lot Big G. I have been made aware of marketleap and have found it to be a useful resource, another extemely good tool can be found on Web position ****.
I find it very frustrating that the various directories take so long to list a site, why is it that some can take minutes and others can take up to two or three months. Obviously this is for editing and site monitoring purposes, but why the huge variation in time. At present I am engaged in submission programmes for various clients, so I make up a spread sheet with all the various url's of the sites I am submitting to, as well as the url of the actual page the listing is supposed to appear on, but to be able to verify the listing I have to keep going back and looking at the actual page. As you will appreciate this becomes a very time consuming task as my client list grows. Do you know or can you suggest a less time consuming method of doing this.

I personally don't know of any solution to help you with your verification chores. You might want to ask the pros in the Free Help and Advice section of this Forum. There are a lot of SEO's who go in there to answer questions.
Good luck

hey Vince, I'm not sure why you see the need to keep track of submissions as there are not too many to do anyway. Once a site is in the index, no need to submit it again. One time will do.
Also, all engines and directories take a random amount of time to crawl or index. Nothing you can do about that. That is what makes all of this sooo much fun. That is also why a SEO cannot guarantee when a site is indexed nor when/if it will get ranks.

Thanks to both Big G and Doug,
In answer to your question Doug, the reason i want to keep track of my submissions is to see if they are actually getting listed once I have submitted them, I realise that once I have submitted a site then unless I am informed otherwise I should assume that it will appear but I like to be able to show my client where thier site is appearing. It seems pointless to me to just send the client a long list of url's of directories or search engines I have submitted the site into if it is not actually appearing in the listings. So what I like to do is list the url of the actual page I have submitted to for instance, if I submit a site for a motor racing team I trawl through the directory so my route would be Home>Sport> Motor-racing>Teams
I would then put the url of this page on my spreadsheet and go back and check for my link without having to trawl through again. Once it actually appears I can then include it in the report I send to the client on a monthly basis. I know a submission service is just that and no guarentee of being listed but it's just a little added service.
I'm not actually sure that I agree there aren't that many places to submit, the client I am presently working for has a large site offering a number of different services which all fit into different niches. I have managed to submit the site in over 200 different niche /topical directories around the world which I have to admit was made easier by the fact the site is available in 5 languages
