This afternoon I did a quick search using the allinurl: prefix to see how my site was doing in the Google index. As I was about to close the browser, I noticed that there was a "sponsored ad" in the righthand sidebar of the results page. It was an ad for a contact/communications management service that was definitely aimed at business owners.
I then did an allinurl: search for a couple of other domains, just to see what would happen. In some instances there were no Adwords sponsored listings in the righthand sidebar, and in at least one instance there were ads for a bunch of sites that seemed to me to be competitors to the site for which I did the allinurl: search.
To me, the serving of sponsored listings alongside allinurl: results seems somewhat puzzling, somewhat amusing, and perhaps a little cheesy, too. Do they expect webmasters who are checking on their index status to click on those ads?
