Hi All:

I recently received a Looksmart listing for one of my sites, and naturally the editor completely rewrote the title and description, but he also chose to use the word search-engine (as opposed to search engine) in his rewrite.

In looking about similiar sites on Looksmart, I note that they have used that word of their own making several other places as well as site-submission, site-promotion, etc.

Since I doubt that anyone is going to use such a word in a search term, and since this is not a word listed in any dictionary that I know of, do you think I have a chance of getting this modified?

Not in any of my dictionaries either. (And Lord only knows that I have a few!) In fact, it quite clearly states in mine: "search engine n Computing a program for the retrieval of data, files, etc. from a database or network."

As far as I am concerned, if it isn't in any of my dictionaries then it doesn't exist!

If logic and correct English usage were to govern then as far as I am concerned, they should change it. Even more so as if you search for "search-engine" then you get radically different results than you do when you search for "search engine".

OH yes. This is a common occurance with the editors putting in a hypen to separate words. You see it all the time.

I always request a change to make it 2 separate words with no hypen and they have always made the change.

I have had hypen problems as well as misspellings in some of my titles and descriptions. A polite email to the editors always seems to work in correcting these problems...
