View Full Version : Whither goest thou M$ - now that L$ is dying?

My understanding of where MSN get their results at the moment are:
-Featured sites (special paid pages)
Sponsored sites (Overture)
Web Directory sites (Looksmart Directory)
Paid inclusion Web Page results (Inktomi)
Free submit Web Page results (Inktomi)
Will the Web Directory section disappear altogether with the demise of L$ ?? - Notice I am an eager grave-digger, cause I just love a wake with a good knees-up.

If that happens, Inktomi is certainly hopping. Now that they lost AOL completely, MSN is Ink's only hope now.

From what I am seeing Greg the L$ directory sites disappear and the Ink sites then rank higher.

Did I hear this right .. is looksmart really going down? I did hear some rumours about this, but is it certain? I was wondering whether something like this would happen after they increased their prices and (very harshly.. if I may say so) set a price per click as well... could somone please shed some light on this? Is Looksmart really going down?

Sorry Sid,
It is not certain yet, but the writing seems to be definitely on the wall, at least from everything I have been able to glean.
Financially they are in a real bind and unless they make a major change and go back on their latest proposals and actions I, for one, cannot see them lasting.

If/When LookSmart ends their miserable existance (and no, they're not going anywhere just yet, unfortunately), then one would have to assume MSN would simply partner with another directory. Others mentioned elsewhere that MSN could possibly buy LookSmart, and that does make a lot of sense. They could buy the current database and keep it up.
But who knows? Maybe they'll use DMOZ! Or how about a Yahoo/MSN deal??? :)

Thanks for the detailed inof guys...
I think though ... that its quite possible that Microsoft will buy Looksmart. .. very feasible..... personally I hope they dont...
But an msn/yahoo merger for somereason does not seem to be likely... but that's a conclusion based plainly on instinct...
any comments...

Right now it's Inktomi. By the summer it will be strictly Google.
Google AdWords is now providing the PPC results at the top and next come the Inktomi results. By summer, Google will be supplying ALL OF THE AOL results.
