Just received this from NBCi:

Dear NBCi Members,

GoTo delivers bottom line results to 45,000 advertisers by driving millions of targeted customers to their Web sites every month. Get listed with GoTo and reach up to 75% of Internet users on leading sites like America Online, Lycos, NBCi and AltaVista.

GoTo gives you:

Reach: With one buy, GoTo lists your site on the best portals and search engines, and delivers highly qualified traffic and increased sales.
Targeted Leads: Customers who click on your search listings are pre-qualified, motivated and looking for what you have to offer.
Bottom Line Results: You control the cost of acquiring new customers because you only pay for targeted leads. This translates into a high return on your advertising investment.

Here's how GoTo works:

Bid on search terms (for example, "backpacks," "school supplies," "binders," etc.) and write customized titles and descriptions.
Appear on top sites like America Online, Lycos, NBCi, AltaVista, Microsoft, Hotbot, DirectHit, Netscape and Ask Jeeves. The higher you bid, the higher your site appears in the search results.
Get lots of targeted leads. Customers who click on your search listings are pre-qualified, motivated and looking for what you have to offer.
Sit back and watch your bottom line results grow.

List your site with GoTo today! They offer three sign-up plans to choose from:

Self Serve:
The do-it-yourself option where you choose search terms, create titles and descriptions, and set bids. There is no service fee and you can start for as little as $50.
Full Serve:
For a one-time service fee of $99, GoTo consultants will provide a proposal of up to 20 search listings in 3-5 business days.

Geez, duh...

This statement caught my eye:

"Customers who click on your search listings are pre-qualified, motivated and looking for what you have to offer."

Some of the visitors may be targeted leads. Others will be competitors simply draining your account. :D

BTW, I have never been a member of NBCi nor did I have a site listed when they were a directory...hmmmmm

Oh...but for the days of NBCi's LiveDirectory. That was a beauty. You could get any listing in there, just the way you wanted it. It was a thing of beauty. <sigh>

HI All:

I agree with you Webwhiz, NBCi was a great place to get any listing you liked (within reason) but I neve rdid get much traffic from there and so I watch them go with dry eyes.

True, Mel. I did have a few sites that seemed to get some traffic from NBCi. But generally it wasn't much.

It won't be long...we'll be a one SE, one Directory Internet!

Going to miss the old NBCi, it was one of our secret weapons. Though we only received a modest amount of traffic from NBCi, it served as a very good litmus for paid submissions into Inktomi. We used only the free LiveDirectory listings and if the page performed well there, then it generally did very well with Inktomi too. Eventually all of our Inktomi paid listings were being driven by the NBCi page performance!~
