I was glad to find this thread - one of my clients sent their staff to attend the launch of Macromedia Flash MX and they came back full of ideas to design a site using Flash.

He did ask about the compatibility issues and was told that search engines can use the Macromedia Flash Search Engine SDK, which extracts and converts text and links from Flash built sites, enabling them to be crawled and indexed by the search engine. <edit>removed link that was already provided above</edit>

Can anyone tell me how many search engines are actually using SDK or intending to use it? Do you think they really care about their ability to spider Flash sites in the future? My client really wants to design their sites in Flash but also want them to be search engine compatible.

From the conference our developers attended, Flash is still unable to be indexed in it's main form.
What can be indexed is the text files and databases used to provide content into the flash movie file. In other words, the DB and text file would reside in the root or another folder and be indexed on it's own, outside the context of the page. Not really an impresive difference in my book.
