First - I should have said I am the webmaster of the site.
The links referred to are ugly, but they are also very effective for search engine spiders to spider deep into the directory. It's like having a site map on the home page.
With the main navigation in the site being done with javascripts it's the only way to make the site search engine friendly.
Is that bad?

oh howard, yes. It is bad. That will trip the se's spam filters no doubt. When that happens a penalty could happen. A human could also view the page and penalize you.
Why not simply make a site map page with all the links with descriptions?
Not only that, but that does not look good for your visitors.

I'm afraid I have to disagree. I've had the page like that for two years, and never had a problem as regards spam. Anyway how can it be spam - every link goes to an entirely different page with original content. It's simply a compressed site map on the home page.

Ya just have not been caught yet. If a Google Rep visited it, he/she would not like it.
Your visitors certainly do not like it and that should be what is important to you.
Oh, how do you know if that page has been penalized? No one is going to tell you about that. You could be penalized and not know it.

maybe I'll do a site map page then - just in case - it would certainly make the home page a lot smaller in size! Thanks for your comments

I sometimes still use Netscape and when I tried a search on your site the results page was completely boggled up. I realize not many people are using Netscape anymore, but just fyi!
