I'm struggling with this concept of inbound link quality. It is clear from comments here and on the google board that the experts believe that link farms don't help and that links from sites with similar "topics" are the way to go.

The dilemma for us is that the sites that are positioned more highly than us on google for our keywords are either sites that don't link to anybody or are our competitors.

In this situation is it worth considering links from link farms or from organizations that don't appear in searches for our keywords?

Any help appreciated. Anybody know any good places I can get links other than yahoo and dmoz?

Any link is good if the page is in Google with a PR 4 or higher and is somewhat similar to what your site is about. I would not worry about your competitors above you for your exact keywords. Simply go after links of similar nature.

Also, get into www.goguides.org and www.joeant.com

I'd strongly avoid getting links from link farms, particularly if they request a link back. YOu don't want to get tarred with the same brush as them.

As far as good sites to request links from...I'd just do a search on Google including your keywords and other words like organizations, groups, etc. That should help you find quite a few good resources.

Hey Doug!

How special are goguides.org and joeaunt.com? They look like "one of a kind" to me... Do they have some hidden special powers :D?

Do they have some hidden special powers?

Nope - just a good link.
