If it's a genuine newsletter-like situation, then you may want to use one of the free listserver services instead.
Unless you're running your own mail server, whomever's providing your outgoing mail server may not appreciate the sudden hit. To you, it's one message. To a mail server, it's 3,000. (If you are running you're own mail server, there are some free listserver programs available.)
If it's unsolicited, then you could find yourself talking to an upset upstream Internet provider and/or find future mail bouncing because your domain/IP range has been blackholed (either on an organized list like SPEWS or dozens of local lists).

Emailing List Pro isn't free, but it's only $15. I run several lists with it, one of over 4000. The unregistered version lets you do everything except find & export, so you can download it for free, import your lists and make sure it does everything you need.

Thanks Everyone!
This appears to be pretty much what I'm looking for except I am having a few problems with the setup. The SMTP server name is required for installation. Although I'm a 20 yr IT Programmer (mainframes) this is new to me. I do know what the function of the SMTP server is, but I don't have a clue as to how I go about getting it for my purposes.
I'm a subscriber to AOL. And, contacted them about this subject. Their only response was ---"we don't support third party software."
Okaaaaay. :(
Can you help again? I intend to purchase the software.

If AOL is your Internet connection, then you've hit a dead end with that setup. AOL isn't your standard Internet provider. They are a closed system that allows you to access the Internet.
One of the things that it affects is e-mail. AOL's e-mail system is proprietary--the only ways you can send or receive e-mail on AOL is through the AOL software and (I seem to recall) a web interface.
There's no AOL SMTP server to enter because there's none you can directly address.
You could get an account with another e-mail provider (just make sure they know what you want to first and are fine with it--otherwise the account may not last the first mailing).
Alternately, there are also programs include the SMTP ability within the program itself--so that your computer becomes the sending mail server. However, I don't think such programs are all that cheap and you need to be careful because that takes you into the darker gray portion of the Internet. Pay by credit card and double check the charges on it for at least a few months afterwards.

thanks to everyone for their help.
i'm going to try a program i just found on the internet. this is what it said on the description while surfing through google.
PostCast Server - free SMTP mail server. ... You can use it instead of the SMTP server of your Internet Service Provider.

i attempted to download it, but i think it's pretty big in size. so, will have to try later.

Be VERY careful. Trying to deliver email directly through the recipient's server will result in, at the very least, not all the emails getting through, which is very bad for an opt-in list.
You may also lose more emails through SPAM filtering programs, and you could even get some SPAM complaints. You may also be violating AOL's terms of service.
If you're married to AOL, a hosted service is the way to go, in my opinion, for your opt-in list.
