LookSmart v MSN

First time post ...

A question. Why is it that my site appears as the No.2 listing for my top keyword in LookSmart and only appears at No. 28 on MSN?

Any advice would be very welcome.

MSN uses a different algo than Looksmart. There is no correlation between the two. Things have changed even more since Looksmart went to being an advertising agency instead of a directory.

As Doug mentioned there is no guarantee that a high ranking at Looksmart will be duplicated at MSN as they rank the MSN sites according to their MSN algo.

But there is one other factor that we can identify;

Your category; Home > Library > Society > Countries > Europe > Slovakia > Guides & Reference is a sixth level category in LS while some of the sites ranked higher than you have been submitted to the category Home > Travel > Destinations > Europe > Slovakia a fifth level category, which may account for a higher ranking.

Also LS passes information to MSN along with its listing info that affectst the rankings, but no on really knows wht the editors pass or what they base it on.

Not much to go, but Since LS degradation from a directory into a PPC engine things have been funny at best.

Any info on the MSN algo. Are meta-tags important, or is it Links In as with Google?

Insofar as the looksmart listings on MSN, the algo is different for the web pages than for the LS directory listings, where all MSN have to work with are the LS title and description plus the info that LS passes along. Tags play no part in the directory rankings.

If it is important, you might consider buying more keywords from LS.
