Guys, I have been working on a new design for the navigation from the main domain to the subs for my site.

http://www.esubmit-it.com

I'm having a problem with it displaying funny on some monitors. Apparently the globe is resting across the bar below it and it's not supposed to ... it's not due to usage of div tags (they are only used in the content area in the middle table).

Any thoughts, suggestions, opinions, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi Deb,

This is how I'm seeing it. Is this right?

Yes Soph, that's how it looks to me also (which is correct) but I've had some reports of it not displaying correctly for some users.

Thanks!

Hi! Deborah
I personally feel the colour combination used by you is not very attractive although I know your question is something different.

I originally used black where it is now tan, turquoise where it is now ****, and dark turquoise where it is now midnight blue.

I am rather fond of the current color scheme and plan to keep it as such. This is the main navigation to the subs and really is the only purpose it serves. This is why I chose such a bold design and layout for this area.

Hi!
Perhaps you can make a white background instead of the light yellow to make the text more sharper.

I tried a white background for the content area when I was first designing it to the current color scheme, but the white contrast was too bold with the midnight blue and that's why I opted for a creme/tan color.

I may mute the creme/tan color a bit more yet ... not sure.

For me, it was coming up similar to Sophie's screen shot.

I also am not too thrilled with the colors though...

Deborah, also am not crazy about the colors. The yellowish coloring looks putrid to me, kind of a green and yellow mix; why not make it ****? I would also make you text one size smaller and make your content text area expand and contract with different resolutions.

Good luck!

I like the quote in your sig. Deb! :)

Thanks Jill. It's an original quote, it's mine. I actually have tons of stuff I've written over the years ... throwback to the days when I was in college and aspired to be a writer .... but, gave it up long ago, though I did manage to get published twice.

OK .... so no one is crazy about the colors ... is that the blue, tan, and ****? Or just the tan? Just the ****? Or just the blue?

I love the design elements, layout, and the graphics ... just trying to figure out a color scheme that will make it snap ... so-to-speak.

I never have these problems when it comes to doing sites for clients, just when it comes to doing my own. But, after designing over 400 websites, I must admit, I am running out of fresh new ideas .... and I don't want to use the all flash design I had originally planned on using.

Thanks everyone for your input. It's ok to be as blunt with me as possible, because you won't hurt my feelings over it. Good design begins with positive constructive criticism with a little bit of creativity thrown in. It's how we all learn, and aspire to be the best we can!

Sorry that is not ****. The RGB color you are using is 183,183.0 according to graphic art books a RGB **** is more in the range of 180.145.72 and some books say 149,95,44. When you mix equal parts of red and green together, say 255 and 255 of each, what color do you get?....yellow and with your mix of red and green you end up with yellow that has an olive green tinge

A more golden boarder would look much better.

There are actually more than one color in the image ... here is a larger version as you can see it is not one solid color ....

Yes, and see the little golden toned v-shaped bracket on the attached to my post; that's more than one color also but it's ****.

Hey call the color what you like but olive greenish yellow looks terrible with the nice dark blue you are using; if it's to much work to change the boarders change the blue to a dark brown shade then the tan text background will will also fit right in because you will be using colors that blend for your page coloring and the yellowish boarder for contrast. The coloring you are using clashes in my opinion and you know what opinions are....

Ok, how come I can see my image but I can't see yours without clicking on the link to it?

I'm not sure why my image didn't attach like yours did. My image was from my hard drive, not located on the net to which a URL could be posted, maybe that's it?

I used PaintShop Pro and the filter called Silver or **** from Filter Factory Gallery S. I don't remember what I set the melter to. Then I colorized it with hue set to 42 and saturation set to 255.

I just redid the graphic and it looks better (it's not online yet) I may even make the border around the tan text area a little more golden also.

I'm redoing the tan text area to #fdfbfb ... which seems to work well with the (now) **** and the midnight blue. Hopefully this will render a little better.

Thanks all.

OK ... the new graphics are up, the **** is now actually **** .. does it look any better to you now WW? After comparing them side by side, I can really see the greenish cast it had before.

I have the content area now in an off-white (redid the graphics surrounding it) .... also have a new font on the titlebar, made the font in the text area smaller ... and it seems to look a lot better.

Thanks so much for all of the help, suggestions, and feedback.

I still have yet to re-do the Earth in the flash header ... it wasn't one of the better Earth graphics I have and had planned to re-do it while meshing out the color scheme.

Looking much better :)

Still not sure about the way the lines at the top finish to the right of the content area but the menu goes al the way across.. looks like you were in two minds about a fixed width site and a scalable one?
IMO it would look better if the top double line and the **** menu bar finished at the right hand edge of the content, or, they both went 100% across.

Just my thoughts

Thanks Highman, yes, I will be changing that as well. The double bar at the top will go all the way across too .... :)

This design was a lot of work, for as many times as I have changed things on it now .... but it's getting better and not worse, so I am happy with that. :p

ok, in that case I would make sure the righthand edge of the menu links end in line with the righthand edge of the content area, just to please the eye :)

Hi Deb,

There are rendering errors when this page is being displayed by MSIE-for-Macintosh. You will certainly not like how it displays.

I did not figure out how to add a screenshot to this message board but I am going to eMail you the screenshot if you pm me with your eMail address.

Thanks! I just PM'd you the email address. This design is surely turning out to be a pain and I may just scrap the whole thing and do something else.

I LIKE it Deb, The colors that is.

Just one suggestion - What about trying a duck-egg blue background for the page rather than yellow but retain the darker blue and **** surround - looks very classy IMO.

<just noticed a few replies have come in and you indicated you were making changes to the background - I did not go to the site but was relying in the graphic shown in the forum here>

You could come down a font size too as it does come across as a bit large. :)

Hey don't give up on it yet Deb.

Just went and had a look and see you reverted to a white background. Did you look to see how #CCFFFF would look or even something a little lighter. I think it could give quite a lift and different feel to your site.

I like the white background much better but don't notice to much of a color difference in the boarder.....hum-m-m-m-m-m-m

That's because they're rebooting the server after installing/updating Apache server modules I requested.
