People always refer PAGERANK to a number. I want to know how to represent PAGERANK by a number?

Do you know the PAGERANK for this page?
http://dmoz.org/Computers/Hardware/Buses/USB/

How about this one?
http://www.everythingusb.com/usb1.1/

Thanks

The actual page rank green bar image (On the Google toolbar) is 38 pixels wide. The first link has a green width of 22 out of the 38.

The second one has a green width of 19 out of 38. (Obviously 50%)

If my math were better than it is then I would work out the percentage of the first but alas....

Hope it helps...

Read all about it here:
http://www.google.com/options/toolbar.html

Load the toolbar and view any pages rank instantly. It is very easy to load.

Great point Maz about reviewing the pixel width!~

On high resolution displays the Rankbar within the toolbar appears to be one complete image, however on my lower resolution workstation a discernable demarcation is noticeable within the google toolbar which can be used to gauge various levels.

Hi usbnuts,

23 and 20 are the numbers we would suggest for those pages.

23/40 = 57.5% for http://dmoz.org/Computers/Hardware/Buses/USB/

20/40 = 50.0% for http://www.everythingusb.com/usb1.1/

While, MazY used the "green bar image (On the Google toolbar) is 38 pixels wide" numbers of 22 and 19 we are recommending the "full green bar image (On the Google Directory Pages) which is 40 pixels wide.

Therefore to avoid confusion, you can see what the PageRank numbers would be for Doug's Page below when using the 40 pixel bar as the standard for both.

* Just for your information, when you see posts of ours that contain PageRank numbers, they will be for the 40 pixel bar.

Here (http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Internet/Web_Design_and_Development/Promotion/Search_Engine_Submitting_and_Positioning/Submitting_Services/Premium_Services/I/) is Doug's Web Page listing in the Google Directory - It has a PageRank of ... 22/40 = 55.0% --- And the Page that the Listing is on has a PageRank of ... 12/40 = 30.0%

Here (http://dir.yahoo.com/Business_and_Economy/Business_to_Business/Marketing_and_Advertising/Internet/Promotion/Search_Engine_Placement_Improvement/) is Doug's Web Page listing in the Yahoo Directory --- And the Page that the Listing is on has a PageRank of ... 16/40 = 40.0%

Here (http://www.freemoneyservices.com/) is Doug's Web Page - It has a PageRank of ... 23/40 = 57.5%

I just installed the Google toolbar and found that a simple mouseover of the PageRank graph gives the page rank for the page shown. Max is 10 and PR is shown as a fraction of that ( 4/10, 6/10, 5/10, 10/10(for google itself!)).

Top point.

Now as page rank data is only really any use in comparison to other sites I wonder how difficult it would be to write a program to _automatically_ extract this toolbar page rank info for the top x number of sites. e.g. the top 25 sites on the keywords "search engine optimization". Could be pretty useful.

[taps computer keys vehemently]

Course they'd have to get round a pretty nifty check sum system.

[looks up]

And here we go, my gift to anyone battling for the keyword phrase "search engine optimization".. SEO PageRank Report (http://web.ukonline.co.uk/christopher.ridings/seo.txt)

Hmmm...kind of puts pagerank in context too.

How did you 'get round' the checksum? how do you come up with a value for the ch parameter? I'd love to know.

Now that would be trade secret :)

It always amused me that people were trying to crack this figure and write a program to do it! I simply make a program that asks a program that does know how to do it (the toolbar)

Thanks for the tip... however, I don't think it will help me much as I work on a linux operating system and don't have access to the toolbar.

I don't suppose you have any 'hints' that may help someone in my situation?

Welcome to the forums Adam! :hi:

If anyone has a tip for you, Chris would be it. :)

Adam, that depends - what exactly do you want to do? (i.e. give me the bigger picture than just working out the checksum so i can see if there's a way around it)

Now i've got to go and find somewhere where I can write in that quote from Doug :)

Being a software developer I work solely on a linux machine as it's the most powerful platform for my type of work. Since Google hasn't ported a linux version of the toolbar, it is impossible to check the pagerank of my website from my machine.

Aside from cracking that checksum algorithm, I have no idea how I may be able to view the pagerank for anything without hopping onto a windows machine.

No doubt, I sound like every other mac and linux user out there... but it would be nice to be able to view the pagerank of my site from my linux machine somehow.

Unless the Toolbar starts to support other systems, you will not be able to use it. You can always go to the Google directory to see the green bar beside each site in the directory. If you are in the DMOZ, you will be in the Google directory as well.

Wow... did I sound that ignorant??

Thanks for the comment, Doug... I think.

Obviously, without windows and internet explorer I cannot use the toolbar - hence the curiosity for some other possibilities. Having recently discovered that the toolbar operates by making a simple HTTP request from the Google servers for information, I am filled with a little hope that the toolbar's functionality may be mimicked... and a way of viewing Pagerank from other platforms may be achieved.

My approach is the crack the 'ch' parameter... which is starting to sound a little futile. Are there any linux or mac users in this forum who are curious for a solution? Has anyone got any ideas??

Yes, cracking the ch parameter is a bit futile, as soon as someone confesses to having done it Google will change it.

However, there are two approaches - to mimic the toolbar partially you could use the graphics in the google directory.

If it's just your site and a few key pages then that's ridiculously easy. The ch parameter is always the same for a particular url. PM me the url(s).

Thanks for the help... I guess for now the process will have to be done manually (ie. getting onto a windows machine and manipulating the toolbar) ... however I haven't given up hope just yet.
