View Full Version : Geocities site submission problem

I've just tried submitting a site hosted at geocities (url of the form http://www.geocities.com/my_site), and had the submission refused because another page with the same domain is under review.

I can understand the reasoning behind this, however I suspect there are a great deal of geocities sites trying to get into the directory, and worry that there will never be a window in which I can submit my site.

Is there any way around this?

For example, could I e-mail the category editor my submission directly?

Yes there is Adam. Get a real web host. :) Sorry but you really should anyway. Those type sites will never be recognized as professional by the search engines or directories.

Yeah, that's the obvious way, but there is NO budget for this site.

Despite the lack of respect the SE's give these freebee domains, for my main 2 word key-phrase there are 2 geocities sites in google's top ten.

I'm sure I can out-do both of those if I can get decent directory listings.

To be on the internet in any way is worth the 5 bucks per month from a real web host. No one can give excuses of any kind as we all throw away 5 bucks every time we turn around. :)

Adam, maybe a GoGuide can help you with this. I don't know if they list geocities sites or not.

There is a french isp, www.free.fr wo offer free hosting, without popup or added code of any kind.
The hosted website's urls are http://xyz.free.fr instead of the usual http://www.geocities.com/xyz
I use it for my music website. If you understand french that could be nice for you, even if a true host is much better

The reason Joeant doesn't allow more than one page from a domain to be reviewed at the same time is to keep unscrupulous webmasters from submitting multiple pages from the same domain. We are not trying to penalize free sites, it is just a solution to a difficult problem. It's not a perfect solutions, just the best we can do for now.

You need to understand that we do not guarantee any site an inclusion. We are looking for the best the web has to offer and indexing it in a way that is of benefit to our end users. If we listed everything then we'd be just another search engine.

Free sites have a tendency to disappear quickly, leaving our directory with broken links. Yes, this can and does happen with paid domains but not as frequently as free hosted Web sites, especially those trying to do business on the Internet. There are other ways some webmasters use the free domains that I will not get into here. I'll just say that it is less than appropriate and makes our job much more difficult.

Personally, I think if a webmaster wants his/her business to be taken seriously, he/she should invest in a domain name and leave the free domains for those who just want a personal page to play around with. If you don't think your business is worth the small amount it cost to get a domain name, how then can you expect us to think you're worth a listing? I'm not saying it's not worth a listing, just don't expect one and know that you will have to put up with issues like the one you have questioned.

To be honest with you, I'm not sure if staff can add the site for the same reason you can't add it. But, email me the Web site and I'll see what I can do.

Adam, your site has been entered into Joeant. You will not see it until the user side of the directory is updated, which is done once a week. Not sure what day but you can view it Here (http://www.joeant.com/DIR/cat/1083/Heavy_Metal) sometime next week.

thanks a lot.

Its great that we've got this forum, and action can be taken so quickly.

AND that we can still have web sites for free :)

Thanks Glo
