Why don;t you post a list of the top/popular Russian search engines? That would be a big help.

No problem :)
There are 3 most popular SEs in Russia
1. Yandex - www.yandex.ru
2. Rambler - www.rambler.ru
3. Aport - www.aport.ru
Rambler is the oldest one. It was founded in 1996. Still does not use any kind of link popularity as a relevancy factor. There are also rating of sites, called "Rambler Top100", which is very popular in Russian Internet (Runet). Almost every site in Runet is a member of this rating. It helps to improve relevancy of search results, because every search query is executing in two parallel databases - Top100 database (in which every site has its own title and description) and usual search database. Then SE makes so-called "blending" and first 5 resuts on SERP are results of search in Top100 database, according to its description relevancy and amount of visitors, and the others come from usual search database.
It is hard to say how many search queries this SE performed, but not less than 1-1,2 million per day.
Yandex was founded in 1997. It has biggest database - about 60 millions of pages. Performs about 2,5 millions of search queries per day. Uses very effective language tools for search, determining duplicate pages and so on. Uses its own version of PageRank, so-called "Weighted cytation yandex". There are also its own Yandex.Bar, not the analogue of Google`s one.
BTW, company that running this SE is profitable. They`ve just reported Q3`s profit three days ago.
WOW, what a lection! :D . Let me stop and relax. And ask, if some of proposed information needs to be cleared.

Do Russians have any credit cards to buy anything online?
Of course, yes. Our banks even are issuing special cards for online payments only. It is usually small paper card with number, expiry date and cvv2, which you can use only in online forms or in bank with your ID.
For example, I have 4 CC`s - including one Visa Internet. And I prefer to use last one for online shopping.
And there are two systems of e-money, Paypal-like, which can be used for online payments. It is Webmoney (http://www.webmoney.ru) and Yandex.Money (http://money.yandex.ru). You can wire your money to your account in this systems, buy plastic cards for renew it and use this e-money as usual ones with momentary transfers and so on.

Thanks.
I will continue.
Forhot to say - User Agent of Rambler bot is "Stack/Rambler". Yandex has three types of bots - one for link crawl, second for indexing the page and third for lightning search term at the page.
All of them has similar User Agent - "Yandex/1.03.000 (compatible; Win16; M, I, D)", where M - is for linkbots, I- index bots and D - lighter.
Also I forgot to say - all russian SEs normally do not index non-russian sites. If you wanna be indexed without delays, it is better to promote russian-speaking site with .ru domain name. You can submit .com site with russian content, it may be indexed. But non-russian site can be represented at SERPs only if it has very high link popularity, for example, Yahoo!, Altavista, so on.
Some notes about Yandex structure. The database of it is clusterized into 30 or so servers. Very fast robot. Working (I mean, crawling and indexing) 24h a day. All "fresh", i.e. just indexed pages go to temporary database called 'add url'. And pages can be found via SE already at that phase. Main database is updated approx. twice a week using 'addurl' base. During such update your page can be dropped out of base because of suspicions of spam, technical troubles or else. So you must track the page position for a few days after.
Because of clustering the base, search results can depend on how busy servers are. For the first - your search query automatically routed to less busy frontend server. For 2nd - webserver send your query to all backend servers and set timeout for its replies. If some of servers are busy and their replies return out of time, search results will be consist of replies of other servers.
What it likes - you must have a solid amount of text at the page. Midsized article with repeating keywords works well. All your scripts (cgi or php) will be indexed. It works well for the forums (UBB for example), guestbooks etc. Also indexes alt tags, but scores it lower than text.
It takes about two weeks for robot to crawl the links and pages after.
BTW - There will be SEO conference in Moscow next week. All those SEs must be represented by chief programmers at the conf. Hope, I can tell you even more about their technologies.
See ya soon. Tomorrow, I think. :thebomb:

Thanks for proposition but most of links are useless here. These are all in Russian, so you are unable to read it.
But, if you ask, Lady...:)
Here is my site - www.searchengines.ru . It was founded 2 years ago. Main part of it - forums, which are only SEO forums in Runet. In the beginning I invited the guys from SEs` crews so it became the only place where webmaster can ask directly SE programmer.
Let`s prepare for next portion of info :).
