Are you stumped for Xmas gifts this year? If so, domain names are a great year round gift.

Whenever someone has a baby within our company, I will normally go out and purchase the baby's domain name as a gift to the parents. For instance, my daughter's name is Taylor Lewis. I purchased taylorlewis.com for her when she was born.

For my sister's 30th birthday, I purchased her name.com as a gift. They're inexpensive and very few people would even think of a domain name as a gift.

If you haven't secured your own name.com, you should do so now. Get it before someone else does!

I usually register them under the person's name as the Registrant and then make myself the Admin, Technical and Billing contacts. As an ongoing gift, I will renew the domain at my cost until such time it is no longer required.

Great tip, pageone!

Not recommended for St. Valentine's Day, though. :D

I've thought of that too P1, and think it's a great idea. Unfortunately, so much of the rest of the world doesn't see how cool it is!

I keep telling my kids I'll buy them their own domains and stuff, and even though they have their own various websites, they still don't seem to care!

I should just buy them anyway, as one day they may thank me for it.

I love the baby gift idea!

I work with a company that does birth announcements- they could add this to their services. A quick template page and a cheap hosting package and you could have babyname.com with an online birth announcement.

This would be a good idea for Father's Day / Mother's Day. A few years ago (in my pre-web days) I made my husband a powerpoint presentation with pictures of him and the kids over the years and threw in some sound clips and a little animation and had it looping on the computer when he got up that morning. He loved it.

It would be cool to put something like that on a website with his name as the domain name!

Give URL's away to small buisness's in my area with some marketing bumph...

or run a competition to a target audiance for a target URL

or...

Yeah, we did this just recently as our pro-bono contribution for the year. Our local community of Diamond Harbour has about 2,500 people and is extremely active with over 300 community clubs and associations in the region.

We bought the domain diamondharbour.net and as a Christmas gift to the community we plan to build a basic site for them so each club can have their own page and update their events calendar instead of relying on the hand delivered notices they currently use. When it's built and optimized, we'll hand it over to the community association to manage and edit. We'll pay for the domain renewal (and maybe hosting) each year as our contribution to the community. A nice feel-good project that will be lots of fun to work on! :)
