I own http://www.javachatrooms.net/
I have this site listed in the java chat section at yahoo and in dmoz... I was wandering if someone could help me achieve top 10 rankings for chat, chat rooms, or teen chat keyword in google or yahoo. Please reply. Thanks a lot

Hi southpole
I hope you got some pms from people interested in helping you.
If you havent been advised already, can I suggest that you consider removing that pop up from your home page.
Some SE's frown on their use when delivered via onload or onunload events.
Good luck in promoting your domain.

Not to question the veracity of what you are saying, Rob, but can you point me to where they say this or some evidence of it.

This is mainly related to the current position regarding adwords.
I am inferring that from this, it is reasonable to assume that they (google, without explicitly stating it) and others, may make an adjustment in their algo, either now or at some latter time.
My own view is that whilst an appropriately sized, well timed pop up may not be overly offensive, most are big, in yer face, ill thought out constructs that offer little if any value to the site content.
from adwords tos
We do not allow links that generate pop-ups when users enter or leave your site. We consider a pop-up to be any window, regardless of content, that opens in addition to the original window.
I have read a few threads here and there that have suggested a shift in opinion regarding their impact on 'user experience quality' Ill try to dig them up for you if i get the time.

Ah, I know about the AdWords conditions, but don't think you can infer anything about search engine algos from this.
I would suggest that pop-ups don't make a blind bit of difference to how well a site ranks. After all, the idea is to rank a page according to it's relevance to a particular search term. The use of pop-ups makes no difference to this process whatsoever.
For what it's worth, I find the damn things irritating beyond belief, but don't think that pages should be penalised on their annoyance factor. Otherwise, About.com would be banned by every search engine in existence.

Well, I would of thought that as the sentiment was there, that perhaps they would also try to implement a general pattern matching aspect of their algo that looked for onload or onunload events associated with open.window.
Granted this wouldn't catch the more determined 'poppers' but would deter a great many others, if they new that pages containing the term were likely to be slightly downgraded as a result.
Like yourself, I too have a personal dislike towards them, I purposely avoid sites that use them, as do many others.
I still maintain, that those SE's that are capable, will apply minor penalties for pages that use them. Granted, there is no real evidence that they are doing so on an algo basis at this point in time, but definite evidence to suggest that they frown upon them, and by virtue of this fact, it is not unreasonable to infer that they may well take steps to tackle the issue at a latter stage.
Which is of course IMHO :)

Many of the really "good" SEOs are very busy servicing clients and some actually maintain a low profile. But here are some general tips:
1. Be wary of SEOs who unconditionally promise a top 10 result. There is a lot of overpromise and underdelivery in this industry. Check out experience, background and (possibly) the SEOs actual up-to-date career employment resume` for a good insight into the person's professional qualifications.
2. Ask to see work actually performed. It's amazing how often this is overlooked.
3. Ask questions about the SEO's specific experience with various search engines.
4. Ask to see documented proof of results, including position reports.
I hope this helps!
Regards.
Geoff

Welcome to the forums Geof! :hi:
Nice little list. There are a few more little things one can check before hiring....
Also, one should 'contact' a few current clients to find more information on the SEO. There are more.
btw, nice pic! :)

Hello southpole,
It would be almost impossible to get a top ten rank for the keyword "chat" anywhere.
I agree about the popups being removed, but for a different reason. The popup ads for "Celebrity Photo's" "All Beautiful Girls" etc, are not what I as a parent would want to see onscreen, if my kid or teen were on the chat site.
Also, look up the COPPA regulations, I didn't see anything on your site.
good luck,
Pete
