Just to start this forum, and for those that may not know...
Searches on MSN will return results from both LookSmart and Inktomi. LookSmart [directory] listings appear first under Web Directory Sites and Inktomi listings follow under Web pages. Using LookSmart for a competitive listing may increase odds of achieving a higher ranking, as well as having an inktomi [duplicate] listing which could additionally boost that position. But don't overlook Inktomi either, as this avenue may be used to target less competitive listings and still obtain high rankings.
A great example might be the keyword phrase (KWP) "search engine optimization". The first 87 listings are all LookSmart directory listings, so a LookSmart listing is mandatory even to compete for top 10 on MSN. However, a KWP of "search engine optimization help" will list Inktomi web pages starting at number 7!~ ;)
In a sense, one could use a theme based approach. Listing the most competitive theme (home) page with LookSmart and Inktomi, and leveraging Inktomi to list sub-themes where the competition may be lower.
