Anyone have any good/bad experience with JPEG 2000?

Is anyone even aware that there is such a thing as JPEG 2000?

Yes,

I am aware, however, I have not used that compression as of yet.

To my understanding (still being researched) a browser needs the JPEG2000 compression plugin installed first before the image can be visually rendered.

Am I wrong in this assumption? As I said.. haven't fully looked into it as of yet.

Am not sure but peeople dont use jpeg as u have to pay royalties to use the compression algo.
What are the advantages of the new format?

Extreme compression.

I downloaded a trial version of the compression plugin and had a 111 MG image.

After compression it was 23 with NO quality loss.

I'll have to test it again, but if memory serves me right the current version IE browser accepts this format.

This format can save bandwidth on those sites who are heavy in the graphic department. Theoretically, this can cut the bandwidth on these sites in half or more.
