Hi,
I'm new to all this staff, so I would like to ask you.
My intention is to submit my site (it's not yet ready) to ODP. Well, I'll take care to meet the requirements (luckily, the situation with them is not so vague as with the other SE and directories ;) ). But when I looked through the lists in the appropriate subcategories, I didn't meet any name started with "AAA" - although it's logical if the category ranking is alphabetical. Do they ban for such names?

Welcome to the forums Marina! :hi:
Inside the categories, the listings are alphabetical but it does not do any good for you with ranks.
Simply find the category your site belongs and submit to it. YOu will be able to tell the sites/listings that are like your site.

Welcome Marina :hi:
As Doug says, do not worry at all on your position in ODP, no one searches in its results bar other webmasters.
The important bit is to get your keywords in your title and description if possible. If you have not spent time researching your keywords then do it before you take on the submission to any directory

Thank you for comments. I've already found one starting with AAA, but I realise that most of the searchers will be using keyword search, and not go deep into the categories. :o: I just thought it could be an additional benefit if my site was as higher in the list as possible.

It does not matter in DMOZ. The partners are where you want to rank good. AOL is the biggest referrer. No one searches on DMOZ except webmasters looking at their own listing and doing searches to find where their site belongs in the directory.

OK, Doug... If so, how much is it going to contribute to the search results in AOL? Provided that my site is scored high in DMOZ?

All your listing means is that AOL will pick it up when they update the DMOZ. Your site has to be optimized with AOL just like with any search engine. Your title and description are important to AOL as well as your content.

Marina,

You do not need to score high in DMOZ, just get a listing with your keywords / phrases in your title and desc, it has been muted that it may be beneficial if the catagory in DMOZ also contains your keywords, although I am not sure on this

At last, with the help of you both, and a thick iProspect's book I understand the point. Much thanks.

Hello Marina,
Actually the AAA may hurt you more than helping you. While it would bring your site to the top of an ODP category (again, nobody searches this), it would filter any keywords in your title deeper into your title.
Ex 1: Term Life Insurance Quotes
EX 2: AAA Term Life insurance Quotes
The first example would rank higher in most search engines than the second (assuming we are only discussing titles) for the desired search result of term life insurance, or life insurance quotes,etc... If an ODP editor gave the AAA to your title, Google would see it as important to the title of your site, and you don't want that.
The only place a AAA would really help may be Yahoo (as long as the category link is a primary search result).
