Ask Jeeves Reveals Top Searches for 2002
Eminem, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Adidas and West Nile Virus Among Most
Popular Queries on Ask Jeeves
EMERYVILLE, Calif., Dec. 10, 2002 -- Ask Jeeves Web Properties, a
division of Ask Jeeves(R), Inc. (Nasdaq: ASKJ), today revealed the top searches conducted on Ask Jeeves at Ask.com(R) during the year 2002. Ask Jeeves, the Web's second most popular search site, has fielded more than two billion queries from consumers since January 1, 2002.
Based on this data, Ask Jeeves provides insight into some of the
prevailing issues on the minds of consumers nationwide for the year 2002.
Analysis of the most frequently asked questions reveals that consumers are using the Internet for entertainment, communication and research. The most popular question, "Where can I find song lyrics?" was asked more than 28 million times during the year and was closely followed by searches for online dictionaries, which exceeded 17.2 million queries.
Current events also helped shape Ask Jeeves' list of top questions. For instance, the slowing economy and poor job market spurred nearly 3 million job searches on the site, and the 2.7 million searches for baby names reflects post September 11th nesting.
In September of 2001, news-related searches on Ask Jeeves increased by more than 100 percent. In 2002 consumers' demand for breaking and relevant news remains a top priority. This year, the top news-related search queries were related to the West Nile Virus. In fact, the flavivirus was asked about twice as often as queries regarding the anniversary of September 11, 2001 -- the second most popular news story of the year 2002.
Search engines are often the first online stop for consumers seeking information about their health. On average, Ask Jeeves fielded 2.6 million health-related queries each week and 135.2 million in the year 2002, revealing the pervasive use of a search engine to help consumers find relevant answers to their most personal matters.
A combination of corporate scandals and high profile CEOs helped shape the fate of the business world in 2002. Martha Stewart was by far the most asked about executive in 2002.
Causing a stir of another kind, rapper Eminem provoked more questions on Ask Jeeves than any other musician in 2002.
From discount airfares to traveling with the family pet, the steady
stream of travel-related queries reveal that consumers are hitting the roads and taking to the air. Ask Jeeves fielded more than 202.5 million questions about travel, with an 84 percent decrease in questions about airport security this holiday season from the same time last year.
Lastly, with the holiday season upon us, Ask Jeeves reveals the most asked about consumer products for the year 2002, helping parents with what's hot and what's not as they compile their shopping lists. This year it seems Harry Potter books appear on many wish lists.
