I don't know if it was mentioned here before, but Jill was also interviewed for an article in...

"Google has grown with little or no advertising," confirms Jill Whalen, owner of Boston-based search engine advising firm Highranking.com. "It's all been word of mouth and Google just spirals upward."

"It's Google's game to lose," says Highranking.com's Whalen.

Hey Jill, After a couple hours of answering that reporter's questions, all she could come up with is that quote from you? LOL

"I make lots of money!" .... :D

Hopefully for the firm optimised of course ;)

"It requires more work to take shortcuts on Google now, and we have definitely seen a shrinking in the number of people doing unethical search engine marketing," said Matt Cutts, a Google software engineer.

uh huh.. and his search term was?

Thanks, Robert!

That Washington Post one is quite amusing. So much good info she didn't put in, and opted for a fluff piece instead.

Just call me Jill Whalen, the money-grubbing SEO.

Was wondering about that other one, thanks for the link, Robert, will go read it after I get my daughter.

sheesh...the silicon valley one got my company/site wrong. They put HighRanking (singular).

Ah well...at least I have more material for my press page (http://www.highrankings.com/press.htm)

Despite their inaccuracies, congrats about the media coverage, Jill! Every little bit helps. My songwriting website (http://www.musesmuse.com/) gets a lot of press. A lot of it is more than a little inaccurate - but it still brings by visitors. I can't argue with that much. ;) Hope the media coverage helps you at least a little! Really unfortunate about the Silicon Valley Biz Ink article though. The least they could have done is double check your url. Sheesh.

All the best,

Thanks, Jodi! The press is really more of an ego trip for me...just fun to see how each reporter can mess up what is said, more than the next! I guess it must not be an easy job with deadlines and all...

I wonder if there's a special technique for getting the reporter to actually print what you want them to say and not the silly things...hmmm....I think I'll talk to my publicity friend about this. I bet there are certain things you can do that might help.

I have heard that you should never say anything that you don't want to see in print. So perhaps if I hadn't said that my biz had nearly tripled, she would have printed something more important. (Or more likely I would have been left out altogether!)

:D It's really hard to know what they'll print. But I'm pretty sure I've heard what you've heard - that you shouldn't say anything you don't want to be printed. Of course, tell THAT to yourself after you've just blabbed your life story to a reporter patiently making notes on the other end of a phone line. ;)

Actually, I think you all might find this quite interesting and amusing all at the same time. One of my columnists posted this - which was given a twist to be songwriting-related, but which can apply to many things in everyone's lives on a daily basis (this guy sells cars for a living!):

Shut Up! (http://musesmuse.com/columnistsgreylogs/archives/00000373.html)

I think it's a pretty good life lesson, really - and it certainly would have saved ME a few times over the phone with some smooth talkin' reporter. ;) (Now if only I could take my own advice, huh? <laugh>)

All the best,

In the US, own a car dealership.
