I have just being comparing my rankings as I find them manually with what www.rankpilot.com finds them . Let me just list a few, Rankpilot given position first, actual second.
Altavista 1 : 4
Google NO : 2
HotBot NO : 8
Lycos 30 : 7
Yahoo -- : 2

In otherwords the automatice system is worse than useless. I have had the same results when I have tried the page before. Is there a reliable one out there or is it just me?

Rankpilot claims to show where your website is ranked against certain keywords, if I go to the actual search engines and check them individually I get very different results. So what is going on? is there a reliable rank checking webpage that give reliable results? because it is a useful service but if it doesn't give real results then it is worse than useless.

Okay. There are many things involved with rank checkers. Just because what they show and what you show does not mean they are wrong. All engines use different databases, so when you go to check, you might see different results that those of people who are checking from a different server or a different area of the world. Nothing is set in stone.

With that being said, I have found the software of TopDog to be very accurate with checking. Others use WebPositiion. I think you will find the online checkers to not be as reliable as software might be. Software can be updated frequently, where online checkers may or may not be.

Hi Drkiosk:

When you check your ranking position manually at the search engine you will get a correct result for that search engine, for that database, for that search term at that time.

When you use software or online rank checkers you are not likely getting the latest exact search results, because they may not have the latest updates or they may not be using exactly the same search terms.

For example when you enter the term in the search engine you do not have to enter your URL, but when you use any other form of checking you do. It may be that your are (for instance) indexed under yoursite.com or www.yoursite.com or yoursite.com/index.htm or www.yoursite.com/index.htm so there is a liklihood that the results can be quite different than what manual checking produces.

For instance note that the software for this forum recognizes the addresses above with www in the address as URLs but does not recognize the others

As Doug mentioned both TopDog and WebPosition generally give good results but you have to buy the software. You can also download Agent Web Ranking software and use it for free. It does not always give as good results as the other software, but the email support is good, it is updated frequently and it seems to be giving better results all the time.

I know about results varying etc but this isn't a one off, it is consistantly useless. As a different example I tried the phrase - Search Engine Discussion Forum -(not in quotes) and looked for the ranking of the URL http://www.ihelpyouservices.com/forums/ Rankpilot says it isn't in the Google database but try that in Google and it comes fifth.

OK I don't want to sound fixated on this but I thought it worth while to ask and warn about it - I guess it is a case of you get what you pay for and Rankpilot is free at least.

I had never heard of RankPilot but it is very obvious their rank checker is not very good. I am not sure what online checkers there are now as most engines do not like them at all.

Hi drkiosk

I've been looking at several page ranking tools. I quite like this one http://www.bruceclay.com/cgi-bin/research400.cgi, although I haven't checked how good it is! PurePromotion.com (http://www.purepromotion.com/) also have a ranking section as do Spannerworks (http://www.bespoke-promotions.com/index.html).

If I knew which one was best I'd use it constantly but as I don't know which is best I simply use all of these tools and end up confused!

I see one of them have cleaned up their spam act since last month in the Google cache. I wonder if your newsletter had anything to do with it? :D
