Got this in the email one of my client sites today. The funny thing is, the email template wasn't spaced right, so there were extra spaces after the contact name, email and the website; very obviously filling those fields from a database.

Hi my name is Dave I was going through the Internet and you were in LookSmart under clientsite.com.

I am trying to contact ****** .
Anyway I specialize in converting traffic into sales and getting traffic to your site. Since you are already doing some type of advertising in LookSmart , I know I can help you out. I was wondering if you could give back with me.

Out of morbid curiousity, I checked the website and all suspicions were conconfirmed. This is the babble that is supposed to "sell me." What is even funnier, the site in questions is not "advertised" in Looksmart, it is there for free!

Dear Friend,

If you are like most Internet companies, you need traffic or advertising, because traffic equals sales. Whether you have struggled with banner ads or other online companies, you've been dissapointed on the bottom line.

Worse, you've spent thousands of dollars that didn't generate traffic for you. Time is running out and you have to generate sales. But every day goes by and your competition is catching up. What are you going to do?

You don't know me yet, but I hate it when companies end up spending thousands or tens of thousands of dollars on promotions that don't work. That's why I created this GET TO THE TOP $19.95 Dollar Special. This a first month for $19.95 Traffic Roundup program.

Without this opportunity you could continue to waste your time and money on search engine companies or banner ads that don't bring results. I have been doing successful Internet marketing since 1996. I have worked with thousands of companies and have the answers for yours. Not only can I help you out in the search engines, but I can also help you generate thousands of unique users everyday through other techniques I have learned.

I know I can drive traffic to your website. I want the opportunity to develop a relationship with you. All you have to do now is sign up! Please fill out your Name, Address and other information along with your 22 keyword phrases.

Just great - "special relationships," a New Year's special, and 22 keywords.

It makes ya wonder if sometime in the future if there could be a organization for SEM or marketing in general that could be some kind policeman for such sites. Make it a criminal offence to scam people like this?

Something needs to be done.

No kidding.

The email spam was bad enough, but this $19.99 submission scam is OLD. Sadly enough, people are still falling for it.

If i can dig up some of their emails (if i didn;t delete them already) i'll post more info...
