I'm in the process of upgrading my hosting account, and have built up a links database (off-site) for some while now.

With the new facilities offered by my host, I can now run the scripts to generate the directory from my site. The scripts (Links 2.0) generate flat html pages, and whilst the directory was on the old (free) web space, it has started to pick up rankings.

I wish to integrate the links database directly into my site on the same server to create a unified professional feel, so, here's my question...

Should I simply have the links directory in a folder called /links/, or should I create a subdomain to contain them?

What are the benefits & pitfalls of having the two scenarios?

http://www.gizmo.com/links/ or http://links.gizmo.com/ ?

You are better off displaying your links in a folder called links aor whatever you wish to name it. Creating a subdomain could be seen as a serperate website. Personally I am not a big fan of subdomains. I would only use them if I had for example a members only part on my site.

Thanks for your reply. Could you explain the reasons behind your views a bit more, please?

Is it really a bad idea to use subdomains for this sort of thing?

PS - I like the idea of using subdomains for a members area! ;-)

Because, If I have this correct, SE's will see your subdomain as a serperate website. Because of that the only outgoing link on your site would be to your sub-domain. And you need more than that!
