Does anyone know the difference the ads get vs normal listings?

Currently I have an add getting 22% click rate on a word, how much better could a listing get then that?

Are there certain words that the ads do better then others?

22%? Really? No other form of advertising or listing could possibly do you better than that. So you are saying everytime a search for:

blue widgets

is typed in Google, your listing under that same term is clicked on 22% of the time it is searched? Amazing.

Hi:

On my very specific Adword campaigns I tend to get 7 to 10 percent. Normally I get 3 percent. In the first case the keyphrase includes geographic info and the AdWord includes the same location. Another high click through rate comes from mispellings, go figure.

I am not that surprised about 22 percent. On some days very targeted phrases are, well 100 percent.

I wish I knew the difference between regular listings and sponsered listing. This is an interesting topic, remember that the FTC issued a warning about this last summer. The search engines needed to label sponsered ads vs regular ads.

I only have one top listing that is a "regular" listing and it gets 7 percent. I have been told by a SE Sales Rep that this is the average for a top posiition. Any one know any studies comparing the two type of listings?

I was also looking for info about the drop off between being listed on the first page vs. latter pages. I thought I read somewhere that most people don't go to the second page, let alone the third. The article had a specific percent.

I think your real question is; should I do PPC or SEO? The answer is you need to do both. Further, if you can afford it you should get a SEO professional instead of doing it yourself.

I have a quick question... do you find that the more competitive the keyphrases the less the clickrate ratio is? With both google adwords and overture the fight over who gets to be top is always changing, and these are very high priced (don't even want to say how much we pay per click :( ) and our click ratios are not that great.

Hi:

I am not sure this helps, but the most competitive key phrase, in our situation, is LESS specific. In my mind that's the reason for the lower click through, they read the rest of the ad and realize we don't have what they're looking for. We are paying over $1.00 on AdWords and on Overture its much higher.

You should try an number of ads at the same time, you can do this with Adwords but not Overture. Also watch your logs. We know the time of the day, week and month that decision makers at surfing, I am not kidding! That's when we turn on the expensive key phrases. BUT, we tried a number of ads and matched the home page to that theme to justify the expense.
