I have a client that insists on putting a video clip on their website..
It is taken from a much longer clip produced for TV..

Can someone on a high speed connection please time how long it takes to download..

On regional dialup here and it was well over 10 minutes!!!

You will find it here (http://www.telegraphretreat.com.au/video)

Thanks.

On my DSL connection it took 3 minutes give or take 10 seconds.

Ack..... no-one is going to wait that long are they.
We didn't put this together and the person that did has put heaps of time into it..
It's a trial as they haven't done it before.. is there anyone around that knows about this stuff and has some sort of magic wand they can wave over it to make it smaller file site without loosing any more quality?

Any suggests except to trash it? (I would like to do that!)

DSL- It started playing at 2 minutes but was only 5% buffered so it stopped and started in fits...

As long as you are not forcing the user to view it, I wouldn't have a problem with simply having it available on the site.

It would be interesting if you can tell how many users abandon it before fully downloading so that you can advise your client about it going forward.

(BTW- I never did see the whole thing.)

Thanks for looking....I don't think anyone would wait that long.. I am trying to get him to go for a simple virtual tour panorama instead... no plugin to download and loads pretty quick on my dialup..
They should be lightening fast on DSL.. well I assume so anyway!
can you time this one so I can give him a comparision please?

To my mind this is 100% better if they have to have something that moves.. :D

Note: this is the first one I have done.. so I am kinda proud that I worked out how to make it happen.. LOL

Nice job excell! I took the tour of all of them. :)

Now I want to move to AU. What area should I live?

Yes Aus is pretty cool.. well pretty hot right now..

Where to live.. UM..

I would try Perth.. I think that is a good city to land in for newcomers.. friendly and outgoing although isolated somewhat.

So I take it those little tours loaded snappily for you then?
I put a page for those that don't have JAVA enabled browser so I think that is the way the go... for now for me.

You wouldn't believe the push the "marketing folks" have over here (especially in tourism) to go out with all sorts of multimedia and spend $s on the latest bells & whistles to enhance their sites..

For the small business owner it is much better to spend there $ on simple website enhancements that can be optmised for the SEs.

Excell - the movie took just under two minutes here on a broadband connection, on a Mac with PC emulation running (that usually slows things down) - so why dont you use both - keeps the client happy - some of us dont mind waiting for that "something extra" as long as the bulk of the site downloads quickly.

Yes, you are right serious. It will not hurt if it is an extra with a warning.. I can tell em to go get a coffee and take a break..

Virtual tour - 1 min on ADSL - nice job!

Excell, PM me if you fancy a link exchange with a similar site

Hi excell,

As a comparison, the panorama took slightly under 30 seconds for me.

Hmmmm...... 3 minutes or 30 seconds?

You can tell your client that if I wasn't timing it for you, I would have clicked elsewhere after about a minute (or less).

Maybe If I had a load time warning and a description of what I was going to see, Id've stuck around.

I see no harm in offering both.

You might PM dvduval (http://www.ihelpyouservices.com/forums/member.php?s=&action=getinfo&userid=381). I think he might know something about this kind of media, but I may be mistaken.

Well, nice white ducks strolling the lawn.

Started playing in 15 second on cable connection.

Foghorn says white chickens would have been better than white ducks.
