Is there any point putting meta tags on the page? There is still some meta tag SE right? But do they produce traffic?

Yes, you should always use a unique Meta description tag. Many of the engines are starting to use it again, at least to show it in your description.
The Meta keyword tag isn't all that useful, but it might help you with misspellings, and/or weird synonyms that you can't really work into your page. This of course is only helpful with the engines that still read it, i.e., Inktomi and Teoma.
Hope this helps!

Thanks Jill!
The meta keyword is such a donkeywork but i guess there is no shortcuts to good ranking in any of the SE.

...no good shortcuts... That's exactly right, and what so many people seem to overlook. SEO is not something you can just do in five minutes and expect to rank high. You just can't...and you never could.
Once people realize that, they may stop trying to trick the search engines, and just get down to the real work of optimizing their site to be search engine friendly.
Yeah, it takes a lot of time and effort. No kidding, everything good does.
Crifer thanks for pointing this out!

Although it is not much use these days, you may like to use the keyword tag to include all of your target keyword mis-spellings, synonyms, jargon etc that you wouldn't necessarily include, or that there isn't room to cover, in your visible page text. I've been doing that lately and it seems to help on the engines that support the META KW tag :).

i'll put my fingers on the wrong key next time i type the KW metatag Don't laugh...that's exactly how I do it!
I try to type a word as fast as I can, and leave that version in the keywords tag. I actually forgot about that as I haven't done it in awhile, but that's what I always did years ago. I'll have to revisit that method!
