visitors vs visits

I am writing a marketing review for a client and I want to explain the different between visits and unique visitors as derived from webtrends. Can anyone help explain what the difference is and why visits is significantly higher then unique visitors

Here are the definitions we use for our WebTrends client metrics:

Daily Unique Visitors = Unique visitors on any given day, who are either first-time or returning visitors. Daily Unique Visitors are counted once for the day, even though they may visit more than once during the day.

Total Visits = The total number of visits to your web site during the time period of the report.
