I have a client who due to problems with their web host (Interland :down: ) decided to abruptly switch not only hosts but from shared to dedicated serving. The site gets around 10k visitors per day, and sells a $10 item.

They need to get a log analyzer for the dedicated server. Their old shared server came w/ WebTrends.

The information that is of most interest to them is:

* bad link analysis
* referrer analysis
* search keyphrases
* paths taken to the purchase page
* paths taken from the homepage
* identification of downtime (hopefully no longer of interest ;) )

The site is run on Windows 2000.

Of the systems I have experience with, I like HitBox the best, but due to their pricing structure, but their page-view pricing structure makes it inappropriate for this client. The solution cannot be expensive, because this site doesn't generate much profit.

Anybody have any recommendations?

Hey cline :hi: How about Web Trends Live (http://www.webtrendslive.com)? All the benefits of Web Trends, but no need to purchase the software and install it on your web server as it's web-based. We use it for our clients and the costs are reasonable, especially as you can combine accounts for multiple clients :).

Kal, thanks, I checked WebTrends Live out. The product looks great, but the pricing is out of reach. The problem is that the site in question gets gobs of traffic and sells a $10 item to a tiny proportion of that traffic. The cost of using WebTrends Live would represent a major chunk of the site revenue.

The analytics package must be much cheaper. Something in the realm of a few hundred $US.

The solutions I'm considering at this point are Wusage, NetTracker, Summary, and Urchin. Still looking for others....

Using Wusage here. It's been worth it for the stats generation I need.

Possible problem areas:
Setup will be a bit of a pain for Joe User... or a Windows-weaned Joe Experienced User.

It does X number of most followed paths, but I don't think you can specifically set it to report paths taken to a certain page.

For me, it seems to drop keyword entries in the reports. For example, the third most common keyword in the list will have stats, but not the keyword. I think it might be because of the WebTrends junk that gets added to the log. I'd definitely some of the log files through an evaluation copy first.

Urchin's good in that it is one of the few cheaper ones that actually track keyword phrases rather than listing each individual keyword. For example, if somebody found your site by searching for "hotels in Wisconsin", it will list that full phrase rather than:

hotels
in
Wisconsin

as 3 separate keywords. I've never understood stats packages that do that! What's the point in tracking keywords if you don't know whether they were used individually or in phrases? Duh!!

Yes, it's nuts to have just a word analysis and not a phrase analysis.

Anybody here use Clicktracks? What do you think of it?
