View Full Version : Has anyone else noticed this?

Every now and then, I come to the this site anew (I have the front page bookmarked) and I see topics that I haven't read (supposed to have the yellow mail bag) marked as being read (they have the brown mail bag) when I KNOW I haven't read them.
Doug/JuniorHarris? Have you seen this?.....Is it just me....Am I going crazy.....Oh NO......Here come the guys in the white jackets........:scattered

hmmmmm.... I don't know. I get the yellow folders if I have not read. At least I think I do. :) I will keep watch.

Whoops, I need to pay attention to that...I usually go to the home (http://www.ihelpyouservices.com/forums/index.php?s=) page, and then click on the View New Posts (http://www.ihelpyouservices.com/forums/search.php?s=&action=showresults&getnew=true&searchid=87) link at the top.
I see the light bulbs going on/off (LOL!) for the forums, but I haven't paid attention to the individual threads. Usually I have several windows open at once, but I'll have to watch for the behavior you describe blue.

One quick question, have you changed the time zone setting in the user control panel?
Blue

I set them to my time zone (PST) which is I think GMT -8, though I'm not sure about that.

Yes, I did a double check, and I'm set to GMT -8 (Pacific Standard Time) and all the time indicators are reading correctly.

I was curious if it could be a time-zone issue, maybe not.

If you are PST you should not need to change anything as the server is on PST time.
Maybe this is what is wrong with the folders.
Server will be changed to EST in the future though.

....will we then have to change time-zone again? After I get in the right zone, now will I be out of synch again....

Yep, but you will get an advanced warning as this time zone thing is really big stuff! :shy:

I started a new thread for your post in the "meta tags" forum since that is what is about. :)

I now KNOW I'm having trouble with the "new posts" / "already viewed posts" feature.
Specifically, I wrote down all the posts for some of the topics..........Then I came back later, and there were new posts that I hadn't written down......BUT they showed as having already been read.
Another distinguishing mark, is that the so-called "already been read" posts that I hadn't written down showed up as "non-visited links" (you know, the standard blue underline?).
Anyway, I have confirmed my suspicions to my own satisfaction.......so what remains is to find out if it's just me, or if others are experiencing this same anomaly.
Can someone please make an effort to find out if this is maybe happening site-wide, or perhaps with just differently configured systems, or is it just a fluke that only I'm experiencing?
It's very frustrating to have to open every topic and search for the "non-visited" links.
Thanks,
JuniorHarris

I'll see if I can replicate the problem...

blue what behavior are you noticing for the light bulbs on the home page? Or are you saying this only effects the mail icon for the threads after clicking on a forum?
Also wonder what browser you are using, and if you use AOL to connect to the internet.

I cannot come up with the problem. My folders and links seem to be fine.
Anyone else?

No, JH, AOL is not my ISP. I'm on Earthlink.
I use IE 5.5 & Windows ME.
The home page lightbulbs are not lighting up, or rather, they are being selective. In other words, some are lighting when there's new topics or posts, and some are NOT lighting when there's new topics or posts.
And so far I can't see a pattern (though I thought that it might have been that they were only lighting to topics that I was subscribed to, but that's not the case).
Drats! I was really hoping that I wasn't the only one, (not that I wanted there to be a problem with the BB). I'll keep looking for a pattern or any other clues and keep you guys posted.
Thanks,

....Windows ME is the problem, or version IE 5.5. I have one site, hey go over here (http://www.onlineatlanta.net/gauge_page/) and tell me what you see....

Was there something specific I should have seen?

Do you canoe?
I do.

Recently, my daughter has expressed an interest so we'll definitely be getting into it this summer. :)

blue, just wanted to follow up with the light bulb/mail bag issue. I was off-line for a bit, and really watched this when I returned. But everything appeared correct and I could not duplicate the problem...I suppose it could be ME as WW suggests...

It seems that the problem has magically cleared itself up, or at least I think so.
I must be going crazy......No, that can't be......cause' I already did years ago.....right after Al Gore invented the Internet. :D

hmmmm, don't know what the problem may have been.

...It seems that I'm still having bad luck with this feature.
For instance, this morning when I logged in, there were 3 bulbs lit on the main page, so I read those posts and then started to check a few other topics.
Sure enough, there were some new posts in other topics, that I hadn't read but weren't lit up on the main page (this last post of Dougs here being one of them).
I really wonder if this is a ME thing? And if so, in what other ways is ME messing up that I haven't noticed yet?
I do have another PC lying around that I can setup with 98SE and see how it does. What OS's are you guys using? And is there anyone else using ME? And if so, would you please check to see if you might be experiencing this?
Thanks (he says while scratching his head  ),

Well, I guess you just have to check each and every forum and each and every topic, each and every day you visit. :D
I use W98 with IE and also have used NS4.7 with no problems.

Thanks for the OS info.
Lately, I have just been checking the "date of last posting" as a reference.
I even try the "View todays posts", and even it doesn't return all posts that I haven't viewed.
Oh, well, it's a small price to pay for using such an excellent tool :) .

I'm running WinNT 4.0 and IE 5.5 with no apparent problems.
I usually use the View New Posts (http://www.ihelpyouservices.com/forums/search.php?s=&action=getnew) link at the top of the home page.
