i've got some old webspace i'm thinking of using.

basically it comprises both UNIX and Windows servers/space. The UNIX side is unix.domainname.com and the Windows side is win.domainname.com.

to use the www.domainname.com you need to set up either of these options in the sites control panel:

1: Redirection - on typing www.domainname.com and pressing go you hit a page with this as the header:

<meta·http-equiv="refresh"·content="0;URL=http://unix.domainname.com">

Basically you set which server you want to be your default and an ugly "If your browser does not automatically redirect please click hee" type page flashs up and redirects you.

2: Unalterable Frame - All content is set up in a frame whose code is unalterable. Gives the appearance all pages inside the frame are www.domainname.com to the user.

Neither is particularly ideal to say the least!!

I'm thinking of marketing the unix.domainname.com URL to search engines and ignoring the www.domainname.com. Unfortunately I can't turn this off, so I need to pick one or other of the options above.

I think this would be ok as long as I never market www.domainname.com but I suspect its been picked up before when I've messed around with the space in the past.

Any suggestions on how to deal with this?

If I only had those two options, I would choose option 1.

You might be better off moving the www domain name to a proper Web host and promoting that. :)
