Trouble installing PHP???

I am new to all of this and so this may sound like a dumb question, but here goes any way....

I have been trying for over a week to get PHP installed from php.net but once it downloads I can not get it to install. I know it is probably something stupid and simple (it always is) but can someone out there patronize me please.

First question:
What server do you use?

Second question:
Have you read the install.txt ?

You can now get the installer from the php site and just run it and it will itself install php.

also search for something called phpdev, it includes apache/mysql and php in the one bundle, v.easy to install.
