Hi Jon :hi:

Welcome to the forum!

This subject has been discussed a number of times so if you want some in-depth opinions, search the forum for the past 3-6 months time period and you can find several threads on the topic.

The short answer is: Don't worry about the number of links. Link to sites that your users will find useful. The web is all about links and the more similiar-themes sites link to each other, the less dependant on search engine traffic you will be!

Good linking does more than help your site to rank well, it helps real visitors to find you in a lot of different ways.

A slightly more technical answer would be that tightly themed outgoing links can earn your site a "hub" designation which can lead to higher rankings. I have a site with a niche-industry directory on it and can tell you first hand that it helps with rankings but also makes for a very popular site!
