View Full Version : Should I try re-submitting?

I tried submitting my site to Yahoo! on 14 July but with no success. I submitted to what I thought was the most appropriate category, followed all the instructions, did everything as asked to the best of my ability and knowledge.
I submitted using the free option as my site is non-commercial but after about ten weeks I still haven't been added.
Do you think I should submit again or is it a waste of time?
Since the last time I submitted I've added a fair bit more content and made numerous tweaks and changes to make the site as usable as possible including adding a site search feature and a site map.
I've also added Amazon affiliate links a couple of weeks ago, will this count against me concerning whether they deem my site to be commerical/non-commercial? The affiliate links are relevant products to the content of the site. I won't hold my breath for the cash to come rolling in.
I can't think of what more i can do, except pay the fee which I can ill afford and don't think I should be expected to pay anyway. I put all the work into the site in my spare time and it generates NO income at all for me. I just do it because I enjoy it.
Any ideas anyone? TIA.
P.S. Is there any way of knowing whether Yahoo! have even looked at the site?

I believe the Amazon links are enough to push you into commercial classification, in which case you will have to pay to be reviewed

Well Joe, you have a great site and definitely Yahoo ready so all I can say is try again. Did you submit to a regional category? That is the easiest way to get into yahoo for free. Remember that the want sites to pay so you have to keep at it like every 6 weeks or so.
I would definitely take off affiliate links as yahoo does not like them and they would see that as the site making money and so not eligible to get in the free way.
You can view your log files to see if Yahoo visits you. It would say something with "editor" in it or "staff".

I'm going to try once again for free, same category as last time:
http://uk.dir.yahoo.com/Regional/Countries/United_Kingdom/Scotland/Counties_and_Regions/Tayside/Cities_and_Towns/Perth
Here is a snippet from Yahoo!:
Yahoo! UK & Ireland always distinguishes between commercial and non-commercial sites. If you're suggesting a site that is in any way commercial - it sells something, promotes goods and services, or promotes a company that sells goods and services - then the site belongs somewhere in the Business and Economy section of Yahoo! UK & Ireland.
Using those criteria I don't think my site can reasonably be considered commercial. I don't want to take of the Amazon affiliate links, not because I think they will make me money but because they are tied in with the content of the site.
I looked at my log files and can find no evidence that Yahoo! even visited the site last time.
On the search term +Perth+Scotland I've managed to get up to 2 on Google, 1 on Northern Light, 5 on All The Web. As my site is non-commercial I can live without being listed on Yahoo!

BTW, your logs will show this:
surf.yahoo.com if it is an editor.
That amazon link is VERY visible to an editor. I highly doubt they will let you in for free if you leave it there. You could be making lots of money monthly from that link. The link says you are commercial with no questions asked.

Not that I recommend this procedure...but I know many submissions into Yahoo are bait and switch...they submit one (non-commercial) page and after it is accepted it is then updated with their commercial content!~ ;)

Hi Joe Bananas,
I just got a free business listing in the Aust & NZ regional Yahoo! Actually this is the second free listing - totally different sites. The first took about 4-6 submissions the second took 2. What I always do is submit, then wait about 5 weeks (no less) then resubmit. With free submissons patience seems to be the way to go :-)
Hope this helps
Sose.

I recently got a commercial site listed in Yahoo UK for free. It took about 6-7 weeks but it did get in. I got an acceptance email and all.

I submitted mid-July, but I don't think they even visited the site.
I'm now told that I won't get in now for free because of my Amazon affiliate links.
I still haven't decided yet whether to try again (for free) or not.
Do Yahoo! ever add sites off their own back? Say they are surfing around and say "Hey, that site's good, that should be in our directory" Do they ever add sites that way? Providing it's non-commercial of course.
I might remove the Amazon link from the home page - when I got listed on the ODP the editor seemingly only looked at my home page.
In fact, I might remove the Amazon links altogether, they are a waste of time - I will never reach the payment threshold. £0.00 earned so far :(

hey Joe, there are 3 members who got listed for free yesterday eventhough they are commercial. Maybe Yahoo is getting easier now. You should try again.

I've just resubmitted, and I took the Amazon graphic off the top of the home page.
Will let you know if and when I get accepted.
