I recenlty linked all of the sites I manage via a small link at the bottom of the their pages....however, i have come to the realization that they all have the same IP or most of them at least due to them being hosted on the same server. The sites with differnet IP's are in the same IP range too. I was wondering if this is "ok" or considered spammy...I am only trying to increase the number of links pointing to my sites and this seemed like a good way.
Thanks,
AntDee

Hi AntDee,
The short answer is ... Your INTENT (motive) is wrong, so therefore it is Spam.
Just our opinion of course, as we would NEVER advise any clients or prospects to use that technique nor do we use it ourselves.
By the way, what do these links say?

it says partners on the bottom of the pages near the copyright and the word partners links to a page with all of the other sites listed with descriptions and a link.

Well then the link is near useless unless "partners" is a keyword. I would concur with Roy and Sharon. All you've done is shown Google you are a big old Link Farm and everyone gets penalized. If these sites were related, say they were all selling jewellery or something, then it goes from spam to grey area. Even being in a grey area is never a good idea. Besides links from non relavant sites are useless anyway and probably do more harm than good. Not all links are valuable. The purpose of link analysis is to ascertain the staus of the site "within its community". This is even more important on engines like Teoma where the related links are used to set up subsets of the orignal query.

Another easy way for se spiders to spot that you are link farming is because you have most likely created a "links nest". This means that all those links pages are all the same. Very easy to spot.
Each and every single website should be treated as a serperate website and its linking campaigns also.

AntDee...
It's very simple. Are those links relevant to the visitors to those sites? Do the sites provide additional content of which they may found useful or helpful?
If so, you can link to your heart's content. If not, and you're putting them there in an attempt to subvert PageRank, then you are risking a penalization of all of the sites.
Pretty much common sense, and has nothing to do with the IPs of the sites.
