Hello,

Does anyone know what is the deal with Netscape? Is it even important anymore? A client of my company has had a listing in ODP for a long time, and in Netscape, web position on all their keywords but their name has continually fallen and are now off the top 30. :(

Thanks for help.

Hi WindyBanks,

I would not worry too much about Netscape. Even with real good positions Netscape will not give loads of traffic. With ODP, AOL is the engine that is much better for traffic.

Thanks, Doug. One less to worry about...

I would not blow off netscape yet...

AOL, at least not that I know of yet, has not renewed its agreement with microsoft for the aol browser...since aol owns netscape, they just may use a netscape browser sometime within the year.

in terms of traffic, netscape sends just a hair less traffic to me than aol does, and up until very recently we were number one on both.

Has ODP changed the way they determine relevancy? The same month that my web position dropped off in Netscape (I'm talking August), it also dropped in ODP, and nothing has changed in the way it is listed.

Newriver, you said until recently you had number one positions in Netscape? Do you know why they've dropped?

Both AOL and Netscape are playing with their search algo's currently, nobody knows when it will settle down. I would imagine within a month we'll see something better.

AOL is definitely playing around with their algo...A site of mine went from #1 to the bottom of page 2! AHH!! and this was for a very competitive keyword.... (don't know about Netscape...i don't usually check my rankings there...kinda just assume it'd be similar to AOL)

The site is listed in ODP but search results for this keyword in ODP haven't changed....

Great point newriver!~ It only makes business sense for one to keep the money in house. If AOL and Netscape were to converge, it could really boost the usage (and importance) for the Netscape directory.
